Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher believes that the club won't break the bank to replace Mohamed Salah. The Egyptian forward's contract at Anfield expires at the end of this season and he hasn't signed a new deal yet.

The 32-year-old has been indispensable under Arne Slot this season, registering 16 goals and 13 assists from 23 games across competitions. His efforts have helped the team sit at the top of the Premier League as well as the Champions League table.

However, Salah is already on the wrong side of 30 and the Merseyside club have to lay down succession plans for their superstar. Recent reports have named Brentford's Bryan Mbeumo and Bournemouth forward Antoine Semenyo as possible replacements for the Egyptian.

Carragher was quizzed on the topic in a recent interview, as cited by TBR Football. The Englishman suggested that Semenyo could be an option for the job.

“I think Liverpool’s model is to sign those players who are a bit under the radar. It’s not Liverpool might lose Salah let’s go and buy a superstar for £120m. I don’t think that would be the case. They want the next quality player,” said Carragher.

He continued:

“I think the problem with Mbeumo is this season he’s really overperformed his xG, so in some ways, that’s a bit of a worry. If someone’s overperforming those numbers you know there will be a regression at some stage."

He concluded:

“You mentioned Richard Hughes before, he’s going to know Semenyo really well isn’t he, so that might be one to keep an eye out on.”

Semenyo is under contract with the Cherries until 2029, and has registered four goals and one assist from 16 games this season.

Salah has since registered 227 goals and 101 assists from 372 games across competitions for the Reds. He has won eight trophies with the Merseyside club, including the Premier League and the Champions League.

The player has shown no signs of slowing down of late and replacing him will be no easy feat. Recent reports have suggested that the Egyptian has already signed a new deal with Liverpool.
