Aston Villa and Newcastle United have emerged as possible destinations for out-of-favour Liverpool star Joe Gomez. According to Football Insider, the defender could be on the move from Anfield after struggling for game time under new manager Arne Slot.
The report claims that the two clubs were also interested in a deal over the summer transfer window. He was also mentioned as a possible candidate in a potential swap deal between the Magpies and the Reds. A potential deal would have seen Anthony Gordon go the other way.
Gomez has failed to register a single minute of Premier League action this season. He has featured just once in the UEFA Champions League with an 11-minute cameo off the bench in their 3-1 win over AC Milan. Slot has preferred to use the centre-back pairing of Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate, while youngster Jarell Quansah also made one start.
Gomez featured across the backline for Jurgen Klopp last season as Liverpool dealt with injury troubles to their defenders. He made 51 appearances across all competitions, collecting three assists last season.
Arne Slot opens up on Liverpool's performance in 3-0 win over Bournemouth
Liverpool manager Arne Slot expressed happiness with the side's attacking threat as they scored thrice in 12 minutes in their 3-0 win over Bournemouth. After the game, the Dutchman said (via press conference):
"There were 12 minutes where we scored three goals but I think during the whole first half we saw many of those moments. Unfortunately for us, the first, second and third didn't go in. The good thing for us was their first chance didn't go in as well.
"Then there were these 12 minutes of one attack after another that led to three goals, which was really pleasing to see at that moment – and which we also needed because we played against a tough opponent. An opponent which showed today that even when they were 3-0 down they just kept on going, kept on going and kept on going. It was tougher than the result might look like."
The Reds eased to a comfortable win at home in the Premier League on September 21 to continue their strong start to life under Slot. Luis Diaz (26', 28') bagged a brace while Darwin Nunez (37') added another in the first half to complete the scoring.
The win sees Liverpool move up to second place in the Premier League with four wins from their first five. Their only negative result was a shock loss to Nottingham Forest last week at Anfield.
