Liverpool and Argentina are sweating over the fitness of Alexis Mac Allister. However, the versatile midfielder has dropped a positive update on his social media account amidst concerns over the extent of his pain.

Mac Allister is currently with the Argentine national team as they prepare for their 2026 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers. La Albiceleste are scheduled to face Chile on Thursday, September 5. They will then travel to Colombia for their second match of the international break on Tuesday, September 10.

Ahead of the matches, manager Lionel Scaloni had cast doubts over the fitness of the Liverpool star. He told reporters that the midfielder was in 'pain' and missed the first training session.

"Alexis didn’t train because he was overloaded, he was in pain. It always happens to us, they come out to do their part. We’ll wait and see how he responds today," he told reporters (via Goal).

He added that his team is "more or less decided" with just the final decision over Mac Allister pending.

"It doesn’t change our way of playing much because we’ll stay the same, but it’s true that he gives us play, set pieces. The rest of the team is more or less decided," Scaloni concluded.

Mac Allister dispelled any doubts over his fitness by posting a picture of him in training on his Instagram account with the caption:

"Working hard and as a team, as always when we put on the national team. Everything ready for tomorrow 💪🏼"

Alexis Mac Allister joined Liverpool from Brighton & Hove Albion last summer in a £35 million deal. He has featured in all of the Reds matches this season.

A look at Liverpool's midfield options

Alexis Mac Allister's fitness update will be a big boost for not only his international manager but also new Liverpool boss Arne Slot. The Dutchman has started with the Argentine in all three Premier League matches so far.

The club are a little light in midfield after they decided against recruiting another body in midfield after failing in their pursuit of Spain's Martin Zubimendi. Curtis Jones' injury concerns also reduce the options available to Slot.

Mac Allister, who has made 49 appearances for the Reds with seven goals and seven assists, partners Ryan Gravenberch and Dominik Szoboszlai in Slot's first-choice midfield. Wataru Endo and Harvey Elliott are other options available to the former Feyenoord manager.

After the international break, Liverpool face Nottingham Forest at Anfield on September 14. They will then kick off their UEFA Champions League campaign against AC Milan at San Siro in midweek (September 17).
