Liverpool midfielder Wataru Endo has opened up about the tactical distinctions between his former boss Jurgen Klopp and current manager Arne Slot. The Japanese international provided insights into the contrasting philosophies of the two coaches, highlighting how their approaches shape the team’s style of play.
Under Klopp, Liverpool became synonymous with "heavy metal football," a high-octane, relentless pressing style that overwhelmed opponents. Slot, meanwhile, is known for his patient build-up play and high-intensity pressing that aims to gain advantage through technical and tactical superiority.
Unlike his predecessor, Slot emphasises technical finesse over physicality, marking a significant shift in the Reds' tactical approach.
While Endo has seen his game time reduced under Slot, he said that the Dutchman’s coaching style is ''more stable'' and that he enjoys his tactics. The Japanese midfielder said (via GOAL):
"I wouldn't say there's a lot of difference - we want to put pressure high. I think the new manager is more stable so he likes the players to stay in their positions how he wants and that's different. But I really enjoy how he plays at the moment and I think everyone enjoys playing his tactics."
Slot has quickly dispelled notions that Liverpool would struggle following the departure of Klopp. The former Feyenoord manager has built on his predecessor’s philosophy and taken the Reds to unexpected highs.
Liverpool are atop the Premier League and UEFA Champions League as they remain in the fray for an unprecedented quadruple.
Waturu Endo says he’s happy to see his role changed under Arne Slot at Liverpool
Waturu Endo has said that he's happy playing as a central defender instead of his natural role as a defensive midfielder under Slot.
In Liverpool’s 4-0 trashing of League Two side Accrington Stanley in the FA Cup third round on January 4, Endo started in the heart of the Reds defence alongside Jarell Quansah.
The Japan international had played as a centre-back in the 2-1 win over Southampton in the Carabao Cup quarter-final. About his role change, Endo said:
"I used to play as a defender when I was 18 to 25 years old so I don't mind if I play centre-back or number six. I just do what I can do. I don't discuss with the manager what my position is.
"Now Joe (Gomez) has got an injury and Ibou (Konate) is just coming back so that's why I played. He also thinks putting me as a defender is a good option to play his tactics so I hope I'm going to get a lot more minutes than before."
Since arriving from VfB Stuttgart in 2023, Waturu Endo has scored two goals and provided an assist in 58 appearances across competitions.
