The FA Community Shield between Manchester United and Manchester City went right down the wire as a penalty shootout was needed to separate the two sides. However, Manchester City were finally declared the champions despite their city rivals taking the lead at Wembley on Saturday, August 10.
Erik Ten Hag went with Bruno Fernandes as the lone striker with Marcus Rashford, Mason Mount, and Amad Diallo completing the Manchester United attack. Meanwhile, the midfield consisted of a double pivot of Kobbie Mainoo and Casemiro, and the backline had Lisandro Martinez, Jonny Evans, Harry Maguire and Diogo Dalot. As usual, Andre Onana was the man in between the sticks.
For Manchester City, Pep Guardiola went with Ederson in the goal and the tried and tested pair of Manuel Akanji and Ruben Dias as the two center-backs. Rico Lewis and Josko Gvardiol completed Pep Guardiola's backline. The midfield consisted of Mateo Kovacic, James McAtee, and Nico O'Reilly. Finally, Erling Haaland, Jeremy Doku, and Oscar Bobb completed the Manchester City attack.
Both teams looked cautious in the beginning and the first half ended without any goals. However, things heated up right at the end as Garnacho scored for the Red Devils in the 82nd minute. Bruno Fernandes found the Argentine with a pinpoint through ball. The winger dropped his shoulders to get past that backline and unleashed a left-footed shot past the helpless Ederson.
However, it was not the end for Guardiola's men as they kept mounting attack after attack. They finally found the chink in the armor in the last minute of regulation time. Oscar Bobb delivered a looping ball and it was met by Bernardo Silva's head, who directed it past Andre Onana and into the United net.
Manchester United lost the penalty shootout despite going ahead in the beginning
Manchester City pushed the match into a penalty shootout after the last-minute goal by Bernardo Silva. Bruno Fernandes converted the first spot-kick for the Red Devils. However, City's hero in regulation time, Bernardo Silva, blundered his penalty. Andre Onana saved his tame effort, guessing the right way to give Manchester United a crucial lead.
Both teams converted the next two rounds with Diogo Dalot, Kevin De Bruyne, Garnacho, and Erling Haaland getting their penalties on point. However, Jadon Sancho missed his spot kick in the fourth round and Manchester United lost their lead.
Manchester City completed the comeback four rounds later when Jonny Evans shot the ball over the bar. Manuel Akanji converted his penalty to win the FA Community Shield for Manchester City.
