Manchester City midfielder Rodri has revealed that the Ballon d'Or award has been a motivating factor in his recovery from injury. The Spanish midfielder is currently out of action with an ACL injury that he picked up in September.
The 28-year-old was outstanding for the Cityzens last season, helping them win the Premier League and the UEFA Super Cup. He then powered Spain to Euro 2024 title over the summer.
Rodri scored nine goals and set up 14 more in 50 games across competitions for Manchester City. His efforts helped him win the Ballon d'Or ahead of Vinicius Junior.
Speaking to Four Four Two, the Spaniard added that he is keen to return to action for the Cityzens before the end of the season.
"Everything seems to be going well with my rehab. It’s been good to spend time with my family here. The energy they give me is important, and a long time had passed since I was back at home. Because of my injury, the award has been like a bottle of oxygen for me," said Rodri.
He continued:
"I want to come back this season, that would be important for me. I don’t know if I can, but I’d like to be involved for a month or two and finish the season."
Manchester City have struggled in the absence of their talisman. Pep Guardiola's team have lost five and drawn one of their last six games.
Has a Manchester City player won the Ballon d'Or before Rodri?
Rodri made history by lifting the Ballon d'Or this year, becoming the first Manchester City player to win the award. It was also the third consecutive year that a player from the Premier League champions secured a podium finish for the coveted prize.
Kevin de Bruyne finished third in the Ballon d'Or rankings in 2022, with Real Madrid's Karim Benzema winning the top prize. Last year, Erling Haaland finished second behind the indomitable Lionel Messi in the rankings.
However, this year's outcome was marred with controversies. Vinicius Junior was largely expected to win the award following a stunning campaign with Los Blancos.
The Brazilian scored 23 goals and set up 11 more from 39 games across competitions. Vinicius Junior won the league, the Champions League as well as the Supercopa de Espana. However, it wasn't enough to help him win the grand prize. Real Madrid were furious and skipped the award ceremony in protest.
