Incoming Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim has opened up about taking Viktor Gyokeres to Old Trafford in January. The Swedish striker has been outstanding for Sporting in recent times and is apparently a target for the Red Devils.
Gyokeres arrived at Lisbon from Coventry City in the summer of 2023 as a relatively unknown face. Under Amorim's tutelage, the 26-year-old transformed into one of the most feared strikers in Europe.
Last season, the Swede registered 43 goals and 15 assists from 50 games across competitions for Sporting. This year, he has already found the back of the net 20 times from 16 games, while also setting up a further four goals.
Gyokeres is already being eyed by multiple clubs in Europe at the moment. Ruben Amorim's impending arrival at Manchester United has sparked talk of a possible move for Gyokeres in the winter. He could be an upgrade on Joshua Zirkzee and Rasmus Hojlund at Old Trafford.
However, speaking recently as cited by Fabrizio Romano, the Portuguese manager insisted that he won't move for a Sporting player in January.
"I'm not going to come for any Sporting player in January. These years at Sporting have been the best years of my life and I won't forget that," said Amorim.
The Red Devils struggled to find the back of the net this season under former manager Erik ten Hag, scoring just eight goals in nine Premier League games. However, Manchester United did register a 5-2 win against Leicester City in the EFL Cup this week in interim manager Ruud van Nistelrooy's first game in charge.
Who is Manchester United's first Portuguese manager?
When Ruben Amorim agreed to take charge at Old Trafford this week, he became Manchester United's second Portuguese manager in their history. The first? Jose Mourinho.
The 'Special One' joined the Red Devils in the summer of 2016 after they parted ways with Louis van Gaal. In his first season, Mourinho managed two trophies, the EFL Cup, and the UEFA Europa League, which they won for the first time in their history.
Mourinho finished the 2017-18 campaign in second place in the Premier League behind Manchester City, albeit 19 points behind the champions. However, things went downhill in his third campaign and the Portuguese ultimately lost his job in December 2018.
Mourinho is currently in charge of Fenerbahce, but remains fondly remembered at Old Trafford. Recent reports have suggested that he endorsed Ruben Amorim's move to Manchester United.
