Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim has dismissed suggestions that dropping Marcus Rashford was a mistake. He stated that the decision was made because of training and he has no regret over it.
Speaking to the media after the 4-3 loss to Tottenham, Amorim stated that dropping Rashford was the right decision for the team. He does not think the forward would have helped them win the match at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium and said:
"No, it is not [a mistake], I feel that I do the right thing for the team so it's never a mistake. We have to make a selection, sometimes you lack in the game and you see some guys go into the game and change it a bit but I don't think it was a mistake because I'm always doing the best for the team in my way of seeing things."
Speaking ahead of kick-off, Amorim added that he was sticking with his decision to drop Rashford as the players called up trained better than the Englishman. He said:
"Selection. I choose the players that I feel that are ready to cope with the demands of playing a strong game. I tried to visualise all week and then choose my players. Just selection."
Manchester United were 3-0 down but managed to bounce back to 3-2 before Sun Heung-Min scored directly from a corner to ease the Tottenham nerves. The Red Devils scored again through Jonny Evans but it was too late for Amorim's side as they crashed out of the Carabao Cup.
Marcus Rashford admits he has been dropped from Manchester United squad for tactical reasons
Marcus Rashford pressed that he wasn't dropped from the Manchester United squad for disciplinary reasons. He added that there was no problem between him and the manager and the decision is just tactical.
He told Henry Winter:
"If it was disciplinary, I would say that here and it will be a bigger problem, but it wasn't that. I want to improve my players and you understand that for so long we tried, for example, with Rash. It does not work. Let's continue to do the same thing or try something different? So it's as simple as that. We have to improve our standards outside the pitch. If they train well and they are better than the other guys inside and outside the pitch, they will play or be on the bench."
Manchester United won 2-1 at Manchester City when Ruben Amroim dropped Marcus Rashford and Alejandro Garnacho. The Argentine returned to the pitch for the Tottenham loss, while the Englishman was not called up.
