Manchester United have been dealt a blow as two of their key players, Bruno Fernandes and Manuel Ugarte are set to miss the Red Devils' next Premier League clash due to their respective suspensions. Their next match is against Newcastle United and is slated for December 30 at Old Trafford.
After the first half ended in a goalless draw, Fernandes had to leave the pitch after picking up his second yellow card against Wolves for committing a bad foul on Nélson Semedo in the 47th minute. His first one came after the Portuguese star fouled Matheus Cunha in the 18th minute.
Ugarte received his booking in the 54th minute after Kobbie Mainoo blocked a counter-attack by the hosts with a tactical foul. The 23-year-old Uruguayan then picked up the ball, delaying the restart which led to the yellow card. He was replaced by Christian Eriksen in the 63rd minute.
Cunha opened the scoring for Wolves with a right-footed shot from a corner in the 58th minute. The home side doubled its lead with Hwang Hee-Chan's goal through an assist by the 25-year-old Brazilian following a fast break after 90+9 minutes.
After the match ended in defeat for Manchester United, there was more bad news on their part with Fernandes and Ugarte being ruled out for their next Premier League match through suspension. The Red Devils captain picked up his third red card of the season. While his red card against Tottenham in October was overturned, the 30-year-old midfielder will now face a one-game ban.
Ugarte, meanwhile, will also miss the upcoming clash against Newcastle after picking up his fifth yellow card of the league season.
While Manchester United are already struggling in the Premier League, being 14th on the league table with 22 points in 18 matches, the absence of the suspended duo could cause problems for head coach Ruben Amorim.
Ruben Amorim's remarks after Manchester United's 2-0 loss against Wolves in PL
Ruben Amorim shared his thoughts on Manchester United's 2-0 loss against Wolverhampton Wanderers in the Premier League. Speaking after the match, the Portuguese manager opined on his squad's performance and said (@UnitedStandMUFC on X):
"We have to improve the relationships, but we have some moments. We lack a little bit of aggression, but we don't train. We just play and try to find a better way to win games and that's it. We can't control the games like the other ones that we lost. I think we were always in control of the game, not always dominating, but in control of some things, some set-pieces. The sending off was really hard for us."
Amorim also addressed Bruno Fernandes' red card and said (via the club's official website):
"I am always frustrated with the red card, but it can happen as he always wants to go for the ball. It is not like he wants to stop the player with a yellow [card]. He wanted to go for the ball, the guy got there first and there is a contact and that thing is tough on him also."
The red card against Wolves marked to be Bruno Fernandes' third red card of the season. He becomes the first Manchester United player to be sent off thrice in a campaign in all competitions since Nemanja Vidic in 2008/09.
Amorim's squad maintained a ball possession of 49% against Wolves while having four shots on target.
