Manchester United lost 3-0 to Bournemouth at home in the Premier League on Sunday (December 22). For the first time in 35 years, the Red Devils will spend Christmas Day in the bottom half of the standings.

Manchester United struggled this season under Erik ten Hag before appointing Ruben Amorim as his replacement. The Red Devils have not fared much better since, winning two and drawing one of seven domestic matches.

On Sunday, Bournemouth repeated the feat they achieved in December 2023 when they put three goals past ten Hag's side at Old Trafford. The Cherries scored thrice in the game and kept their opposition quiet at the other end to claim a convincing win. Manchester United are in 13th place following the game, having picked up only 22 points from their 17 league games this season.

The Red Devils will be in the bottom half of the table for Christmas for the first time since December 1989 when they finished the season in 13th place with 48 points from 38 games. Amorim's side are nine points outside of a top-four spot in the league and will return to action on Boxing Day (December 26) against Wolves.

Manchester United have conceded 22 goals in the Premier League this year, indicating their struggles at keeping the ball out of their own net. They have also conceded three or more goals at home in the league this season on four occasions, one more than Southampton.

Manchester United receive thrashing at home to Bournemouth

Manchester United were at the receiving end of a thrashing after a rollercoaster week for the club, losing 3-0 to Bournemouth at Old Trafford on Sunday. The Red Devils defeated Manchester City 2-1 at home on December 15 before losing 3-4 to Tottenham Hotspur in the Carabao Cup on December 19.

On Sunday, Spanish youngster Dean Huijsen opened the scoring for the Cherries after 29 minutes, taking advantage of United's inability to defend set pieces. They have now conceded 17 goals in the Premier League this year from set pieces, the most for them since 1992.

Bournemouth continued to impress in the second half and got their second strike just a minute after the hour mark when Justin Kluivert fired a penalty past Andre Onana. Andoni Iraola's side were not done scoring. In the 63rd minute, Antoine Semenyo fired home their third of the game to seal the win.
