Legendary Manchester United goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar has sent a message to Altay Bayindir following his heroics against Arsenal on Sunday, January 12, at the Emirates. The Turkish international was handed a rare opportunity between the sticks in the FA Cup third-round tie against the Gunners.
It was only Bayindir's fourth start for the season for the Red Devils. Interestingly, he had a disastrous outing against Tottenham Hotspur in the EFL Cup quarterfinals.
Manchester United lost the game 4-3, with Bayindir having a day to forget. However, he was offered the chance to redeem himself over the weekend against Arsenal, and the 26-year-old put on a masterclass.
With the score tied at 1-1 on Sunday, the Turkish custodian saved a Martin Odegaard penalty to keep his team in the game. He made multiple crucial saves to take the game to penalties.
Bayindir then saved Kai Havertz's spot kick and ensured Manchester United progressed into the fourth round with a 5-3 win. Following the game, the player shared a picture of his penalty save from Odegaard on Instagram.
He captioned the post:
"A victory to remember! We never gave up until the end. We will keep fighting for this badge and achieving victories together, thanks to the passion of our fans."
Van der Sar reached out to praise the Turkish international, commenting:
"Well done my friend!"
The Red Devils next face Southampton in the Premier League on Thursday, January 16. They will face Leicester City in the FA Cup fourth round in February.
