Manchester United star Harry Maguire reacted to Scott McTominay scoring for Napoli in their 3-0 win over Fiorentina in Serie A on January 4. The Scotsman netted the third goal of the game, pushing the Gli Azzurri to the top of the table.
The Red Devils sold McTominay to Napoli in a deal reportedly worth £30 million in the summer of 2024. The midfielder has been impressive for the Italian side, scoring five goals and providing three assists in 18 games across competitions.
After scoring against Fiorentina on January 4, he shared his picture on Instagram with blue heart emojis in the caption. Manchester United star Harry Maguire commented on the post (via United in Focus):
"At it again"
Maguire and McTominay shared the pitch 151 times at Old Trafford and even combined for two goals. The latter came through Manchester United's academy and made 255 senior appearances for them, contributing 29 goals and eight assists.
McTominay has now become a key player for Napoli this season as they look to win the Scudetto under Antonio Conte. They sit atop the Serie A standings, three points above Atalanta, who have a game in hand. Inter Milan, meanwhile, are third, four points behind Napoli with two games in hand.
Ruben Amorim opens up on Harry Maguire's miss in Manchester United's draw against Liverpool
The Red Devils traveled to Anfield to face their arch-rivals Liverpool on Sunday in the Premier League. Lisandro Martinez gave Manchester United the lead in the 52nd minute before Cody Gakpo equalized seven minutes later. Mohamed Salah (70') made it 2-1 from the penalty spot before Amad Diallo restored parity (80').
In the seventh minute of stoppage time, United had an incredible chance to win the game. Joshua Zirkzee received the ball in the box but instead of shooting, he chose to pass it to Harry Maguire. His pass was poor and so was Maguire's shot, which went over the crossbar.
In his post-match press conference, Ruben Amorim was asked if Zirkzee should've just taken the shot instead of passing it and he answered (via manutd.com):
"For me, I think it was the perfect decision, because he can shoot but he put the ball more in the centre for one guy is running back. The ball I think was really slow for Harry to score, but sometimes you can not do it. But Josh made a good decision in my opinion."
Amorim recently announced that Manchester United are set to trigger the one-year option to extend Harry Maguire's contract until 2026.
