Jadon Sancho and Leny Yoro start for Manchester United in their pre-season friendly against Scottish giants Rangers today (July 20). Erik ten Hag's men traveled to Edinburgh to face the Glasgow outfit at Murrayfield Stadium.
Ten Hag has named Sancho, 24, in his starting lineup. It marks the English winger's first outing in Red Devils colors in 11 months (419 days). After falling out with his manager, he spent the second half of last season on loan at Borussia Dortmund.
Sancho has made up with Ten Hag since returning to Manchester United following his Dortmund loan. He'll be looking to impress today and give the Dutch coach food for thought regarding a potential fresh start at Old Trafford.
Leny Yoro, 18, also starts for United in his first game since joining the club from LOSC Lille in a reported £52 million deal. The highly-rated French teenage defender was on Real Madrid's radar, but he's headed to the Premier League instead.
Andre Onana starts in goal, with Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Leny Yoro, Jonny Evans, and Sam Murray in defense. Toby Collyer, Casemiro, and Mason Mount are in midfield. Amad and Jadon Sancho join Ethan Wheatley in the attack.
Manchester United will want to bounce back from a disappointing 1-0 loss to Norwegian outfit Rosenborg in their opening pre-season friendly. Ten Hag was angered by his team's performance in that game.
Manchester United CEO Omar Berrada reportedly made it his personal mission to sign Leny Yoro
Manchester United's signing of Leny Yoro was a statement of intent, given the European powerhouses they were up against. Madrid were favorites to sign the France U23 international but were unwilling to match the Red Devils' offer.
Liverpool and PSG also monitored Yoro, but he opted for Old Trafford despite a lack of Champions League football. He becomes the club's second summer signing following Joshua Zirkzee's arrival from Bologna.
Yoro looked increasingly likely to join his favorite club, Madrid, but United's new CEO, Omar Berrada, had other ideas. Marca reports that the former Manchester City figure worked relentlessly to win the race for the French teenager.
Berrada spoke to Yoro's agent, Jorge Mendes, and learned of his intentions to join Los Blancos. He remained eager to bring him to Old Trafford, wanting to usher in a new era and prove to fans that INEOS means business.
Leny Yoro's capture speaks volumes about the changes in recruitment at Manchester United. The 13-time Premier League champions have struggled in negotiations over the years, but INEOS is taking no time to sort out deals.
