Jamie Carragher has claimed that Manchester United should look to part ways with Marcus Rashford if they aim to win major trophies. The former Liverpool defender insisted that Ruben Amorim needs to offload several players he inherited to build his squad.
Carragher highlighted that several Manchester United players have not lived up to the expectations in recent years. With Rashford being linked with an exit from Old Trafford, the pundit claimed he is far from surprised by the rumors.
Carragher insisted that despite being one of the highest earners in the Premier League, Rashford has hardly been consistent. He suggested that Manchester United won't win a Premier League or a Champions League with Rashford being one of their key attackers.
Carragher wrote in his column for The Telegraph:
"Amorim has taken over an underperforming squad on high wages, and it needs trimming to enable him to invest in the players he needs. Given how many signings have dropped in value since joining United, it does not surprise me that big names such as Marcus Rashford are being linked with a move."
The former England and Liverpool defender added:
"United should sell him as he is not delivering value for his lucrative contract. Eleven goals in his 48 league appearances over the past 18 months is not good enough. There has been too much of a pantomime around Rashford for the last few seasons, the promise he showed when breaking into the side not realised."
"He is 27 now and should be in his prime. In a front three, Rashford is the third attacker. United will never win the Premier League or Champions League if he is leading the line," he concluded.
Rashford came through Manchester United's youth ranks and made his first-team debut in 2015. Since then, he has made 426 appearances across competitions for the Red Devils, registering 138 goals and 68 assists. The 27-year-old has made 24 appearances across competitions this season, scoring seven goals and providing three assists.
Ruben Amorim claims Manchester United star will improve in new role
Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim backed Amad Diallo to improve his game in the No. 10 role. The Ivory Coast international played as a No. 10 for the Red Devils as they secured a comeback 2-1 win against Viktoria Plzen on Thursday, December 12.
In his post-match press conference, Amorim claimed that Diallo will improve in his role with experience. The Portuguese manager highlighted that Diallo came too deep to get the ball in the first half but he wanted the 22-year-old is stay higher.
Amorim was quoted as saying by Eurosport:
"I think he can be a very good player in that position. He has a left foot, we needed a left-footer in that role."
"I think in the first half he was coming for the ball too much. He needs to play near the goal, near the back line. It’s the first time he will improve in the future," he added.
Diallo joined Manchester United from Atalanta in 2021 in a deal worth a reported £37.2 million but never got regular chances under Erik ten Hag. He has been a revelation under Amorim, providing four assists in six games.
