Pep Guardiola has acknowledged that he was surprised by Liverpool fans chanting 'sacked in the morning' during the Manchester City clash at Anfield on Sunday, December 1. He added that although the Reds faithful were right, they were quiet in the past when their team were losing to his City side.
Guardiola told the media that he was proud of his Premier League titles and believes the only reason he still has the Etihad job is because of his six title triumphs.
"Sacked in the morning chants? Maybe they are right with the results we’ve been having! I didn’t expect that at Anfield... Maybe they should’ve sung it in the past. I didn’t expect it from the people from Liverpool, but it’s fine!" he said via the Guardian.
“I’m so proud of my six Premier Leagues against that [Liverpool] team and the previous team [under Jürgen Klopp]. I didn’t expect Anfield to start chanting at 0-2 that I would be sacked. Maybe I deserved to be sacked with our results! Maybe I’m still in the job because I won six Premier Leagues and a lot of titles. They want to sack me. I wish they were more kind," Guardiola continued.
The Spaniard added:
"Why didn’t they do it at 0-1? Why didn’t they do it last season when we won the Premier League? Why do they want to sack me now? I didn’t expect that from Anfield, for other clubs like Brighton, I can understand it. But for Anfield, I didn’t expect this, maybe it is the respect we have. They know we have won six Premier Leagues. But it’s fine, it’s part of the game.”
Manchester City lost 2-0 to Liverpool to fall 11 points behind the Merseyside giants. Cody Gakpo and Mohamed Salah scored in either half for the hosts.
Manchester City star takes a dig at Liverpool following 2-0 loss
Manchester City goalkeeper Stefan Ortega was not happy with the chants from Liverpool fans and took a dig at the Merseyside city. The German claimed that he was told by 'someone' that it was not the best area in the United Kingdom and the 'sacked in the morning' chants proved him right.
“Someone told me before that this area is probably not the best part in the UK. I think he reacted really well,” Ortega said via the Guardian.
Manchester City are now fifth in the Premier League with 23 points from 13 games.
