Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher has raised doubts about Wataru Endo’s future at Anfield, suggesting that the Japanese midfielder could be sold in January. Endo has featured in just three games for the Reds this season, coming off the bench for two of those appearances.
Carragher was on Sky Sports commentary duty for Liverpool's 5-1 Carabao Cup win over West Ham when he discussed Endo's future. He stated that Endo might not fit the profile of defensive midfielder that manager Arne Slot prefers.
"I'm not sure he's [Endo] the type of profile that Arne Slot looks for in that position," Carragher said (via Express UK).
The player-turned-pundit went on to compare Endo with Liverpool’s primary transfer target from this summer's transfer window, Martin Zubimendi of Real Sociedad.
"You talk about the No.6 they were looking at, and we all know that guy was Martin Zubimendi. He's a complete contrast to the type of player that Endo is," he added.
The Reds reportedly turned down an offer from Marseille for Endo during the summer transfer window, but Carragher believes a move could still be on the cards.
"He's [Endo] done a great job for Liverpool since he's come in. If Liverpool would have brought in Zubimendi, then there's a good chance that Endo might have moved on. That might be something that happens in January," Carragher speculated.
Endo’s future will likely hinge on how Liverpool's midfield situation evolves through the season, and more importantly, how the club acts in the upcoming transfer window.
"It is not always about the player himself" - What Liverpool boss Arne Slot said about Wataru Endo's role previously
Liverpool manager Arne Slot praised Wataru Endo for his work ethic and performances in training last month. However, he acknowledged that the Japanese midfielder could see limited game time due to stiff competition for midfield spots.
Speaking about Endo’s role in the team back in August, Slot said (via Express UK):
"It is not always about the player himself, it’s also about the competition he faces. We have many good midfielders like we have many good players."
Despite joining the Merseyside powerhouse from Stuttgart last year, Endo has struggled for consistent minutes on the pitch. He earned his first start under Slot during the Carabao Cup win against West Ham but has largely played a peripheral role. Slot, however, had emphasized that Endo’s performances in training have not gone unnoticed.
"We are really pleased with the way Wata is training for us, but he has some good competition and I think you saw [vs. Brentford] a good performance from all three midfielders. So it is not always about him, it is also about the others."
Slot had also noted the importance of squad depth, stressing that Endo will still play a role throughout the long season.
"He will be important for us during the season because we need all of them; we all know how long a season can be over here and how many players you need. And he is one of them that we are going to need in the upcoming season."
