Mohamed Salah has provided an update about his future at Liverpool after their 5-0 win against West Ham United in the Premier League on Sunday (December 29). The Egyptian forward said he is still ‘far away’ from deciding on his future at Anfield, as his contract at the Merseyside club will expire next summer.
Mohamed Salah continued his outstanding campaign by scoring one goal and providing two assists to inspire his side to a dominant victory on Sunday. With a game in hand, the Reds have moved eight points clear (Nottingham Forest are second) at the top of the Premier League table.
However, while Salah seems to be a key player for the club this term, the two parties are yet to agree on his contract extension. It was reported earlier this month that the Merseyside club offered an extension to the 32-year-old to extend his stay beyond the current season.
The report also mentioned that they have yet to reach a consensus on how long the Egyptian will remain at Anfield.
During an interview with Sky Sports after the match against West Ham, Mohamed Salah reiterated that there have been no further developments as far as his contract extension is concerned. He said:
"We are far away from that. I don't want to put something in the media and people start saying stuff, but nothing really has moved on. Now I am focused on the team and hopefully, we win the Premier League."
Salah’s heroics against the Hammers earned him the Man of the Match award. He is the top scorer in the Premier League in the ongoing season, with 17 goals from 18 league matches.
"He looks like he could play for the next four years" - Jamie Redknapp on Mohamed Salah’s contract at Liverpool
Former Liverpool player-turned-pundit Jamie Redknapp believes Mohamed Salah could play for the Merseyside club for another four years. Redknapp claimed that he understood why the club were hesitant to offer Salah a long-term contract but added that his impressive form could make the club budge to his request.
Redknapp said on Sky Sports:
"I understand Liverpool's position. He's 33 in June so how long do they give him? Right now, he looks like he could play for the next four years, but you just don't know. Some players reach the peak and then start to drop off - you think of two players who signed big contracts in [Mesut] Ozil and [Pierre-Emerick] Aubameyang. But I don't see that with these three players. They're so hungry, so effective, so good at what they do and it's playing into Liverpool's hands."
He added:
"I think Salah will end up signing a contract. They'll have to find some middle ground on what they want because he will want the top money, but Liverpool will be nervous about his age and not giving him too long of a deal. But because he's playing so well, he's almost forced that issue for Liverpool to have to give him what he wants."
Salah last signed a contract extension in 2022. He has scored 20 goals and provided 17 assists in 26 appearances for the Reds across competitions this season.
