Pundit Paul Merson has shared his thoughts on Jose Mourinho potentially becoming the next England manager. He is against the idea of appointing the Portuguese due to his playing style.
The Three Lions parted ways with Gareth Southgate on Tuesday, July 16, after the UEFA Euro 2024. They lost 2-1 in the final against Spain on July 14, marking an end to a trophyless eight-year stint for Southgate. While they reached the final, England's performances were quite disappointing throughout the tournament despite boasting some excellent players.
In a recent episode of Football's Greatest podcast, Paul Merson was asked if Jose Mourinho should be considered as the next England manager. He answered:
“No [I wouldn’t take Mourinho as the next England coach], and I only say that because all of a sudden England are now getting to semi-finals and finals and now that’s not enough.
“Now it’s got to be entertaining, it’s got to be box office. Mourinho ain’t going to give you box office! He’ll get you to the final, 100 per cent like Gareth did, but it won’t be amazing."
Jose Mourinho has had an illustrious managerial career with the likes of Real Madrid and Chelsea but has yet to manage a national team. He was recently appointed manager of Turkish giants Fenerbahce.
Jose Mourinho's hilarious post after Spain beat England in Euro 2024 final
Spain completed a perfect Euro 2024 campaign as they won every game, including the final against England in Berlin. Nico Williams (47') gave them the lead before Cole Palmer (73') equalised. Mikel Oyarzabal (86') then scored the winner and secured the trophy.
After the game, Jose Mourinho shared a hilarious post on Instagram, congratulating some of his former players, writing:
"2024/Champions League winner captain Nacho Fernandez/European Champion winner captain Alvaro Morata. Many congratulations to them and to the coach who gave them their debut when they were just kids in the Academy 😂😂😂. Same coach who did not understand that Dani Carvajal was another one 😡🤬😀
"Many congratulations to Mister De La Fuente for an amazing job. Best team won!"
Both Alvaro Morata and Nacho Fernandez made their senior debut for Real Madrid under Jose Mourinho in 2010 and 2011, respectively.
Morata captained Spain at Euro 2024, lifting the trophy. He is set to join AC Milan from Atletico Madrid this summer. Nacho, meanwhile, made four appearances at Euro 2024. He's now joined Al-Qadsiah after leaving Real Madrid last month.
