Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong has opened up about his contract situation amid speculation over his future. The Dutchman insists that he's only focused on football and will make the decision in due time.
De Jong arrived at Barcelona from Ajax back in 2019 on a five-year deal. The Netherlands international then signed a renewal a year later by deferring a part of his salary, keeping him at the club until 2026.
As he enters the final 18 months of his current deal, there have been some rumors linking De Jong with an exit, with clubs like Manchester United and Liverpool credited with an interest.
According to a recent report from SPORT, Barcelona are willing to sell the midfielder for a discounted price if contract negotiations don't come to fruition in the summer.
Despite all the rumors, though, De Jong seems concentrated on his performances on the pitch. Speaking to Voetbal International, the former Ajax midfielder said (as quoted by transfer expert Fabrizio Romano on X):
“My contract renewal is an issue for the papers here, but for me it’s not. I want to play football and after that I will see what the club wants to do with me, and then I will decide what I want to do, together with my agent and family."
De Jong has made just 13 appearances across competitions for Barcelona so far this season owing to a long-term ankle injury he struggled with last term as well. He has contributed a goal and an assist apiece this campaign.
Barcelona dressing room's stance on Dani Olmo's registration issue revealed - Reports
Barcelona's dressing room's stance on the controversy surrounding Dani Olmo and Pau Victor's registration has been revealed.
The Blaugrana were dealt a major blow after being denied the registration license for both players by LaLiga. As things stand, Olmo and Victor are set to miss the rest of the season.
Things took a turn for the worse after RFEF, Spain's governing body in football, came out in support of LaLiga's decision and put out a statement that the club's appeal will not be granted.
While the club continue to work on fixing the situation and getting the two players back into the fold, their teammates are not worried. The Blaugrana's dressing room have given their backing for Olmo and Victor, according to Spanish outlet Marca.
Hansi Flick's side will next face Barbastro in the Copa del Rey this Saturday (January 4).
