Erik ten Hag has confirmed that Manchester United held talks with Thomas Tuchel this summer. He reveals that the club admitted they held discussions with the German but decided not to make him their new manager.

Ten Hag said on Dutch TV ahead of England vs. Serbia on June 16 that Manchester United's officials came to Ibiza where he was holidaying with his wife. He added that they decided to stick with the Dutchman despite holding talks with Tuchel. He said:

"The club management came to me while I was on holiday in Ibiza. They suddenly showed up on my doorstep and told me they wanted to continue with me. It was a turbulent season. Never a dull moment.
"Manchester United have told me that they spoke with Tuchel, but they eventually came to the conclusion that they already have the best manager."

The manager added that the club took their time with the season review and added:

"As in any organisation, it is wise to evaluate. Manchester United did that too. The new owner is new to football, he has taken his time. They have indeed told me that they have spoken to other managers. That is not even allowed in the Netherlands. Then it is forbidden to talk to other coaches if there is still a trainer."

Manchester United were linked with a host of managers including Mauricio Pochettino, Thomas Frank, Robert de Zerbi, Gareth Southgate, and Graham Potter. However, they are sticking with Ten Hag and new contract talks have reportedly begun as well.

Erik ten Hag was adamant that he was the right man for Manchester United

Erik ten Hag was under immense pressure last season after the club finished eighth (their lowest ever) in the Premier League table. They suffered 14 losses in the league and fans were calling for a sack.

However, Ten Hag repeatedly said that he was unable to deliver because of the injury issues. He told Sky Sports when asked if he could turn things around at the club:

"Absolutely. If the right players are available, we have a good squad. We miss almost the whole backline and then we have problems. I will keep fighting. I prepared the team in the best way I could do. It was not good enough, I have to take responsibility for that but I will find energy and prepare them for Sunday's game."

The Red Devils finished the season on a high by winning the FA Cup. They defeated Manchester City in the final, with Alejandro Garnacho and Kobiee Mainoo scoring in the 2-1 win.
