Fans have hailed Lionel Messi's assist in Argentina's Copa America 2024 opener against Canada, while comparing him with Cristiano Ronaldo. The match ended in a 2-0 win for La Albiceleste at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, Georgia, on June 20.
After a goalless first half, Argentina opened the scoring through Julian alvarez (49') via an assist by Alexis Mac Allister. Lautaro Martínez then doubled the lead in the 88th minute after a stellar pass from Messi.
Fans took to social media to appreciate the 36-year-old's performance against Canada. While some couldn't get enough of his assist, others drew comparisons with his Portuguese rival. Here are some of their reactions on X:
"No way can Ronaldo ever do this 😭"
"Messi way ahead of time."
"he can make magic happen anytime he’s on the pitch," chimed in another fan.
"Best passer of all time."
"Greatest playmaker of all time."
"Messi's way of reminding everyone He can be the best player whenever he wants to."
While another wrote:
"Messi did all the work. Might not get the credit but that goal isn’t happening without that pass."
Argentina have won the Copa America 15 times, with the last one being in 2021.
David James takes his pick in Cristiano Ronaldo vs Lionel Messi debate
Former Liverpool goalkeeper David James has made his choice clear in the now infamous Ronaldo vs Messi debate, which has been going on for the better part of two decades.
James named the Portugal captain as his choice for the Golden Boot winner at Euro 2024 (via Football Extra on Sony Sports Network):
"Yes [Ronaldo is my choice for Golden Boot at Euro 2024], I think he'll score a free-kick as well."
Giving an explanation for his choice, James added:
"When Rio Ferdinand says Ronaldo is the most hardworking player he played with, that is saying something. Definitely better than Messi, because Messi doesn't turn up for big games all the time."
"I think the debate on who is the best was over a long time ago. Lionel Messi played well for one club, but Cristiano Ronaldo has proved himself in different leagues, in different continents by winning golden boots and through consistent performances. He is the image of something you want to be."
Argentina are pitted against Chile next in Copa America 2024 at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey on June 25.
