"One of the reasons Liverpool favoured Slot last summer" - Jamie Carragher highlights why Manchester United could struggle under Ruben Amorim

Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher has pointed out some of the reasons why Manchester United-bound Rubem Amorim could struggle when he moves to Old Trafford. He said while Amorim’s arrival could create a temporary boost in morale among the United faithful, his managerial prowess will be tested 18 months after his arrival.

Manchester United confirmed in a statement via their website on Thursday (November 1) that they have appointed Ruben Amorim as head coach. The deal will see the Portuguese manager stay at the club until 2027, with a club option of an additional year.

Ruben Amorim is currently one of the highly-rated young coaches. However, Carragher believes that it will take a while to know whether the former Sporting CP gaffer will succeed at Old Trafford. He wrote in his column for The Telegraph:

''Amorim is one of the current generations of coaches who play three centre halves. Bayer Leverkusen's Xabi Alonso and Inter Milan's Simone Inzaghi are the same. My suspicion is that one of the reasons Liverpool favoured Slot over Amorim last summer is because the Dutchman prefers the more traditional four at the back, so the transition was easier for the squad he inherited.
''Under Jurgen Klopp, the style of the first team was mirrored down to academy level to ensure those who made the step up were familiar with the playing patterns. He is highly rated, but it will be no quick fix for the Portuguese, according to Carragher, and he has theorised why. [The players] may not be suited to the system the new manager played at Sporting Lisbon.'

He added:

''It will take a while before we can know if Amorim can succeed where his recent predecessors were found wanting. He is clearly a highly rated coach who has been on the radar of top clubs for a while.

On when it will be judged whether Amorim’s tenure at United was a success or a failure, he said:

''Amorim’s real challenge will be in 18 months’ time – just as it was for those who left Old Trafford believing they needed more time and patience to get it right.’

Jamie Carragher pointed out that some of the players that Erik ten Hag bought may not suit Amorim’s style of play. The former Liverpool man believes, though, that the Portuguese manager could make some tweaks to get United in the right direction.

When will Ruben Amorim join Manchester United?

Manchester United have confirmed that they have appointed Ruben Amorim as their head coach. However, he won't immediately take charge of the Red Devils. Amorim will still be at Sporting CP for some days before he finally joins United.

He will join Manchester United on Monday, November 11. This means he will not be in charge of the Red Devils next three fixtures, which are against Chelsea, PAOK, and Leicester City. In the meantime, Ruud van Nistelrooy will be in charge of the team as an interim manager.

Manchester United beat Leicester City 5-2 at Old Trafford in the EFL Cup Round of 16 on Wednesday, October 30, under Van Nistelrooy. They will next face Chelsea at home in the Premier League on Sunday, November 3.
