Liverpool fans lauded striker Darwin Nunez on social media following his performance in the 2-0 win over Aston Villa in the Premier League on Saturday, November 9. Nunez was among the players who stood out for Liverpool in the match.

Going into the clash, Unai Emery’s men were hoping to turn a bad spell around as they were winless in their last four matches across competitions. Arne Slot's side, on the other hand, were keen to continue their winning streak.

Twenty minutes after kickoff, the Reds drew first blood courtesy of Darwin Nunez. The Uruguayan striker's goal came from a Villa corner, which resulted in a counterattack opportunity for the hosts. Virgil van Dijk sent the ball to an advancing Mohamed Salah, who was hauled down by Leon Bailey. Nunez then pounced on a loose ball, rounded Emiliano Martinez, and fired home from a tight angle.

Aston Villa made a few attacking threats, but goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher preserved his side’s lead. Six minutes from time, Mohamed Salah put the game to bed as he raced away in another counterattack to slot the ball past Martinez. Liverpool took a pragmatic approach to see out the last few minutes and move five points clear at the top of the Premier League table.

Despite the fact that Darwin Nunez failed to covert another counterattack opportunity after he scored the opener, fans took to X (formerly Twitter) to heap praise on him.

One fan wrote:

''People seem to overreact but this is decent."

Another fan claimed:

''Darwin Nunez does the difficult things so effortlessly. A brilliant finish, most no. 9s wouldn't be able to do."
''Nunez whenever he feels like it," @kmtpcfc remarked.
''Darwin Nunez shooting on instinct vs shooting with time to think," @B83Markus chimed in.
''Nunez finally added composure to his game," @disgame23 added.
''His stats are not as bad as people make it seem tbf," @HAS_SAN26 opined.
''110 combined, that’s amazing and top class," @penisilinne wrote.

"If you play at Anfield in front of your own fans you should always be motivated" - Liverpool boss Arne Slot

Arne Slot has insisted that his players are not motivated by Manchester City's current run of form. The Cityzens dropped points once again in the title race as they suffered their second consecutive league defeat against Brighton & Hove Albion (2-1). They also lost to Tottenham Hotspur in the Carabao Cup (2-1) and Sporting CP in the Champions League (4-1).

Following the victory over Aston Villa, Slot told Liverpoolfc.com:

''I cannot tell what the fans felt about that. I can only tell that if my players need extra motivation for a result on the pitch, that would not be a good idea. I think if you play at Anfield in front of your own fans you should always be motivated and that’s what they’ve been for the time I have been here now and probably the years before as well. So, you should not need motivation from a result on another pitch and that’s also not what I felt today with the players. Maybe the fans feel different, I don’t know, you’d have to ask them.’’

Liverpool will next be in action after the international break against Southampton in the Premier League on Sunday, November 24.
