Former Liverpool winger Jermaine Pennant reckons summer singing Dominik Szoboszlai is becoming a fan favorite at Anfield this season. The Englishman said that the Hungarian midfielder is already winning the hearts of the supporters with his eye-catching performances since switching to Merseyside.

Liverpool completed the signing of Szoboszlai from Bundesliga side RB Leipzig in a deal worth €70 million back in July. The midfielder has featured in all of the Reds 12 games across all competitions, recording two goals to his name.

The Hungarian has fit into Jurgen Klopp's system like a glove at Anfield. With his eye-catching performances from the center of the pitch, he's earned a lot of admiration from the Liverpool faithful. Pennant believes the 23-year-old is already cementing his reputation as a fan favorite as he said via Mirror Football:

“Szoboszlai’s came in he’s got the No.8 jersey, big, big boots to fill with Steven Gerrard’s number. But he’s quickly becoming a fans favourite with his energy, passing range, the goals he scores, he runs around non-stop. A fantastic addition to that midfield.”

Pennant isn't the only Liverpool icon who has had positive remarks about Dominik Szoboszlai. Former Reds star John Barnes also hailed the Hungarian's start to life at Anfield, admitting that it caught him by surprise and likened him to Steven Gerrard.

“Szoboszlai understands his role, and from an individual perspective, his technical and physical ability is much more than I expected," Barnes told BonusCodeBets.co.uk.

He added:

“I didn’t know much about him when he came into the team, but he’s good on the ball. He can dribble, he can pass, and he can shoot. He’s got a great attitude; he can get up and down the pitch."
“I think if he played as a box to box, like a Steven Gerrard type of role, he is that type of player. Right now Liverpool play with a midfield three, and he’s not required to play that way, but he can do everything in midfield. I’ve been very impressed with him."

Szoboszlai won Liverpool's Player of the Month award in August.

Liverpool on the right track this season

Unlike last term, the Reds have had a promising start to the 2023-24 campaign. They have managed to claim victories in nine of the 12 games they've played across all competitions so far, to go with two draws and one defeat.

As it stands, they're ranked fourth in the Premier League title race with 20 points in nine games, just three points below the pinnacle. Their Europa League outing has began with a blast as they beat LASK and Union Saint-Gilloise in their first two games.

Jurgen Klopp's men are also active in the EFL Cup after defeating Leicester City 3-1 in the third round last time out. Up next, the Reds will go head-to-head with Toulouse in the Europa League at Anfield this Thursday, October 27.
