Furious fans shared their reactions online as Manchester United’s misery continued on Thursday (December 26). They succumbed to a 2-0 defeat in a Premier League match against Wolverhampton Wanderers. The Red Devils went into the contest against Gary O’Neil’s men on the back of a 3-0 humbling against Bournemouth in their last league game on December 22.
After a goalless first half against Wolverhampton, Bruno Fernandes received a second yellow card in the 47th minute that led to his sending off for his challenge on Nelson Semedo.
The numerical disadvantage on the Red Devils side seemed to turn the tide in Wolverhampton’s favor. Matheus Cunha opened the scoring for the hosts in the 58th minute, beating André Onana from a corner kick.
After trailing by one goal, clear-cut chances came at a premium for Rubem Amorim’s men. The Red Devils tried to find an equalizer in the dying embers of the game, but Hwang Hee-Chan dashed their hopes with a strike for his team (90+9').
Manchester United have now lost their last three games across competitions. They are languishing in the 14th position on the Premier League table and, in terms of points, closer to the relegation zone than the top four.
The Red Devils' poor run of form has triggered a series of reactions online that appeared to mock the Manchester-based club. Here are some of the reactions:
A popular United blog wrote:
''Relegation on the cards at this rate.''
One user with the username @Vinche910 tweeted:
''They need to fire everyone at the club embarrassing.''
''It is 100% okay to turn on all of these players btw. They are clowns should be ashamed to call themselves footballers,'' @SirAwesome2296 wrote.
Another fan opined that Manchester United deserved to be relegated to the third tier of English football League One rather that the EFL Championship.
''You need to get rid of 70% of this squad,'' @FootballReprt opined.
Ruben Amorim says Manchester United ‘have to survive’ after 2-0 defeat against Wolves
Ruben Amorim said Manchester United must adopt survival mode to end their poor run of form. The Red Devils have lost four of their last five Premier League games and sit eight points above the relegation zone.
Amorim has now set an unwanted record at United, becoming the first manager to lose as many as five of his first 10 games in charge of the club across competitions since Walter Crickmer in 1932. After the match, the Portuguese manager said (via the club’s website):
"Yes. In this moment we have to survive and have some time to work on the team. We already knew it when I start this job and you start with a team in the new idea and without any training and just in the games. We already knew it and it is a long journey like I said in the first day and we have to continue. We have to fight in these bad moments because this is football."
Manchester United will next be in action against Newcastle in the Premier League on Monday (December 30).
