Rio Ferdinand has hailed Manchester United star Amad Diallo for his remarkable performance in their 2-1 win over Manchester City on Sunday. Both sides faced off in the Premier League derby at the Etihad Stadium on December 15, with the Red Devils snatching all three points late on.
A first-half goal (36') from Josko Gvardiol opened up the game for the Cityzens, and they were widely expected to complete the match with a win. However, late in the second half, everything went topsy-turvy for the hosts, who faltered in defense.
Matheus Nunes sent a very poor back-pass to his goalkeeper Ederson, which was stolen by Amad Diallo. The winger didn't take a shot immediately, holding off momentarily, but Nunes tackled him in the penalty box. In the 88th minute, Bruno Fernades scored from the spot to put Manchester United level.
Less than two minutes later, a stumbling Manchester City defense were too slow to latch onto a long ball from Lisandro Martinez to Amad Diallo. Ederson came out of his post to stop the winger, but Amad got there first, lifting it over the keeper before putting the ball into the net.
The 22-year-old was easily the best player on the pitch, and Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand took to social media platform X to hail him. The former defender posted:
"Written off by many inside and out the club. Too lightweight. No power. Can’t run. Too young. Big price. And more. But [Amad Diallo] is delivering, the desire plus quality is thriving."
Amad Diallo finished the match with a goal, a penalty won, five successful dribbles and seven duels won. He was caught offside three times.
Ruben Amorim pleased with Manchester United's comeback against Manchester City
Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim has shared his delight with the Red Devils' comeback against Manchester City. After the game, he told the press (via Supersport):
"It was incredible. I think we deserved it. It was a very tough match but we believe until the end. We managed to score, we needed that win, it was important for us and for our fans.
"We were in the game for 90 minutes and that is very good. We talk about the Arsenal game (a 2-0 defeat), we played well in the first half but they were not believing that we could win. Today was so much more different."
The Portuguese head coach added:
"I also believe. Then we have Fergie time and we put the things together and something magic happened. It was a good day for us."
Manchester United remain in 13th place in the league table despite their win over Manchester City. However, this could be the turn-around the club need to return to strong winning form, which could see them rise up the rankings in the Premier League.
