Liverpool great Roberto Firmino sent a message to Luis Diaz after the latter bagged a hat-trick against Bayer Leverkusen in the Champions League this week (November 6). The Merseysiders played host to Xabi Alonso's side and ran riot at Anfield, securing a 4-0 victory.
Diaz took the spotlight with an excellent display in front of a boisterous home crowd. The Colombian forward opened the scoring after an hour of action with a sleek chip finish. After connecting with an excellent through ball from Curtis Jones, Diaz scooped it past Leverkusen keeper Lukas Hradecky.
Liverpool doubled their lead just two minutes later through Cody Gakpo's header, assisted by Mohamed Salah, who swung in an excellent cross from the right with his weak foot.
Diaz then scored his second in the 83rd minute, with Salah providing another excellent assist in a similar fashion, but this time with his left. The Colombia international completed his hat-trick in stoppage time with a no-look finish, something Firmino is certainly familiar with.
The Brazilian was renowned for his no-look goals during his time at Anfield and Diaz's third goal brought back some memories for Liverpool fans. After the game, Diaz took to social media to celebrate his victory.
He posted a picture of himself holding the match ball and the Player of the Match award with a caption that read:
"First hat-trick at home and more to come."
Firmino commented:
"No look goal done. I saw little hand... big hug 😁🙏🏼 🔥🔥🔥 "
To which, Diaz replied:
"I learned a lot from you Manito..! a big hug."
Firmino spent eight years at Liverpool from 2015 onwards, playing an instrumental role in the club's success under Jurgen Klopp. The Brazilian now plies his trade in the Middle East for Saudi Pro League side Al Ahli.
Arne Slot heaps praise on Luis Diaz after Liverpool beat Bayer Leverkusen
Arne Slot lavished praise on Luis Diaz after his hat-trick against Bayer Leverkusen this week. He insists that the Colombian winger receives as much affection in Liverpool as he does in his home country.
Diaz's exceptional display against the German champions in Europe saw fans at Anfield chanting and singing as his name echoed throughout the stadium. Speaking to reporters after the game about his reception, Slot said (via ESPN):
"Not only do people in Colombia love 'Lucho,' the fans in Liverpool love him too. I heard many times the fans singing his song and the manager likes him a lot as well. I don't love him, but I like him a lot."
He added:
"It's not possible for every player to play every game. I only have four attackers available with the injuries we have and, with the fixture list it's impossible to play them. But for me, 'Lucho' is a starter."
Diaz has scored nine goals and provided two assists in 15 appearances across all competitions so far this term.
