During a Euro 2024 campaign, Netherlands players picked their favourite players, ranging from Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi and others. Ronaldo's Portugal opened their quest for a second European Championship title against the Czech Republic in Leipzig on Tuesday (June 18).
Ronaldo and Messi are widely regarded as two of the greatest players to have graced the beautiful game and are still going strong despite being on the wrong side of 30.
While Ronaldo is busy at Euro 2024, Messi is with Argentina, who are looking to defend their Copa America title in the USA. Meanwhile, in an Instagram video posted by Euro 2024, various Netherlands players took turns picking their favourite players.
Here's how the segment went:
Xavi Simons picked Neymar. Memphis Depay took the name of Ronaldo. Another took the name of Messi. Matthijs de Ligt picked his former Juventus teammate Ronaldo. Ronaldinho, Messi and current Oranje striker Wout Weghorst were the other picks.
Woghorst was one of the scorers as the Netherlands opened their Euro campaign with a 2-1 win over Poland.
The 31-year-old famously scored a late brace to force extra time - and subsequently - penalties in the 2022 FIFA World Cup quarterfinal loss to Messi's Argentina - who were the eventual champions.
Euro 2024: What's next for Lionel Messi's arch-rival Cristiano Ronaldo?
Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi are going great guns for club and country. While Ronaldo is looking to lead Portugal to a second Euro triumph, Messi is striving to lead Argentina to back-to-back Copa America titles.
The 39-year-old Ronaldo is on the brink of multiple milestones at Euro 2024. Some of them are becoming the first player to appear in six editions of the competition and to score in as many editions. He's also looking to become the all-time Euro assists leader and oldest scorer in the competition proper and in the final.
Meanwhile, Messi's Argentina open their Copa America title defence against Canada on Thursday (June 20) in Atlanta, Georgia. Peru and Chile are the other teams in their group.
