Ruben Amorim has stated that fans will have to wait for Manchester United's clash against Newcastle United to find out who captains the side in Bruno Fernandes' absence. The Portuguese midfielder will miss the Red Devils' Premier League match against Newcastle United on Monday, December 30, due to suspension.
Fernandes was sent off at the Molineux Stadium during Manchester United's 2-0 loss against Wolverhampton Wanderers on Thursday, December 26. As a result, he will miss the Red Devils' next league game. His absence has raised a question about who will captain the side against Newcastle on Monday.
During a recent press conference, Amorim was asked about his preferred captaincy choice for United's next game. Responding to the question, the Portuguese tactician said (via UtdPlug):
"We'll have to wait for the match to see."
Amorim has a few options for the captain's armband against the Magpies. English defender Harry Maguire was United's skipper before former manager Erik ten Hag stripped him of captaincy in July 2023. Meanwhile, Christian Eriksen or Casemiro can also step up for the Red Devils against Newcastle.
United are currently 14th in the Premier League table with 22 points in 18 matches. Manchester United have won only one of their last five Premier League matches, which came against Pep Guardiola's Manchester City, who have won only one of their last 13 matches across all competitions.
Manchester United join Arsenal and Real Madrid in race to sign 19-year-old Spanish defender: Reports
Manchester United are considering a move for Bournemouth defender Dean Huijsen, as per Tribal Football. Apart from the Red Devils, Mikel Arteta's Arsenal and Carlo Ancelotti's Real Madrid are also said to be interested in signing the Spanish defender.
Dean Huijsen joined the Cherries from Juventus on a six-year deal in July 2024 for a reported transfer fee of £15 million. The 19-year-old has made 13 appearances for the side and has scored two goals in English top-tier football.
The 19-year-old has started Bournemouth's last five Premier League games, helping the side keep clean sheets in three. He was part of the Cherries side that outclassed Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United. Huijsen also scored Bournemouth's winning goal during the side's 1-0 victory over Spurs on December 6.
Multiple top European clubs are considering a move for the 19-year-old. However, his current contract with the Cherries will only expire in the summer of 2030, which means he won't come in cheap.
