Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim provided a response when asked if the Red Devils will sign new players this January. The winter transfer window is now open with high expectations that the Mancunian giants will turn their fortunes around with some help from the transfer market.
The Red Devils currently sit in 14th place on the Premier League table, just seven points ahead of Ipswich Town, who are in the final relegation spot in 18th. They didn't start the season well and sacked Erik ten Hag. They brought in Ruben Amorim, who has now lost six games in his first 11 in charge.
When asked about Manchester United's plans in the transfer market, Amorim was tight-lipped. Ahead of their upcoming match against Liverpool at Anfield this weekend (January 5), he told the press (via Fabrizio Romano on X):
“Which positions will we cover? I will keep that to myself… but we will try and do something.”
With players at Old Trafford more attuned to Erik ten Hag's 4-3-3 formation and tactics, they have struggled to adapt to Amorim's 3-4-3 style of play.
Manchester United legend urges Red Devils to sign players in key position
Manchester United legend Gary Neville has urged the Red Devils to sign two players in the wing-back position. Ruben Amorim's 3-4-3 formation utilizes wing-backs who are expected to contribute to the game's intensity by bombarding up and down the flank in attack and defense.
However, the Red Devils have full-backs like Noussair Mazraoui and Diogo Dalot, who have both struggled to impress in those positions. After they lost 2-0 to Newcastle United at Old Trafford on December 30, Neville pushed for Manchester United to sign wing-backs.
He said on Sky Sports (via UtdDistrict):
“I could say centre-forward, let’s get a world-class centre-forward, let’s get Isak in, but that’s never going to happen. I think if you were starting, you’d have to start with the fundamentals of this system, which is the wing-backs, they hold it together.
“If you don’t have the wing-backs functioning up and down that are able to attack and defend equally as good, and there aren’t many of those around, by the way, because there aren’t many teams that play wing-back, then you’re going to struggle."
He further admitted:
“And that’s nothing against [Noussair] Mazraoui or [Diogo] Dalot, I think they’re very willing and doing the job the very best that they can. But they’re to me the areas that I would start in this system.”
With Ruben Amorim's words, though, it does not seem likely that Manchester United will do much business in the transfer market this January.
