Irish airline Ryanair made a hilarious comment on a viral Cristiano Ronaldo image in which the forward was in tears following his penalty miss against Slovenia in Euro 2024. With the Round-of-16 game goalless, the Portugal captain had the opportunity to send his side ahead in extra time, but he missed the spot kick.
Ronaldo broke into tears immediately after and journalist Fabrizio Romano shared the legendary striker's image. Ryanair quoted Romano's tweet and wrote:
"When you forget to check in online"
Cristiano Ronaldo, however, made amends for Portugal later that night, converting the first kick in the penalty shootout that his side won 3-0. With this win over Slovenia, they confirmed their quarterfinal spot, where they will face France.
Ronaldo is the highest goalscorer in international games with 130 goals in 211 games for Portugal. At 39 years old, Euro 2024 will likely be his final appearance at the European Championships.
Cristiano Ronaldo on penalty miss against Slovenia in Euro 2024 Round of 16
Cristiano Ronaldo said he let his side down with the extra-time penalty miss against Slovenia in Euro 2024 Round of 16. While the Selecao went on to win the match on a penalty shootout, Ronaldo cut an inconsolable figure after his miss.
Ronaldo was tasked with converting a 105th-minute penalty against Slovenia but was thwarted by goalkeeper Jan Oblak. Speaking after the match to the press (via FotMob), the legendary striker said:
"At first I was sad, now I am overjoyed. This is football. This is what football gives you."
The Portuguese legend concluded, saying:
"You cannot explain this. It goes from eight to 80. We had the chance to go ahead. I failed. Oblak defended it. I need to see it again, I don’t know if I hit it right or not.
"I feel sad but happy as well. It's important to enjoy progressing. We're doing a great job, we're here to the bitter end. We had more chances, we deserved this."
Cristiano Ronaldo will be keen to put his penalty miss behind him and help Portugal to victory in their next Euro 2024 clash against France. The rerun of the 2016 final in Paris will be played in Frankfurt on July 5.
