Cristiano Ronaldo's motivational speech to Joao Moutinho in Euro 2016 has resurfaced on social media. The video has re-emerged after Portugal's win over Slovenia on Monday (1 July) which saw an entertaining penalty shootout.
Roberto Martinez's men locked horns with Slovenia in the Round of 16 of the 2024 European Championships. Neither side could break the deadlock in the regulation 90 as the match went on to extra time.
Cristiano Ronaldo had the opportunity to secure the lead in the 105th minute as Portugal were awarded a penalty. However, the five-time Ballon d'Or winner failed to convert, with Slovenia keeper Jan Oblak making a brilliant save.
Ronaldo redeemed himself in the penalty shootout and scored the first penalty for his side. Portugal won the shootout 3-0 as Diogo Costa put on an exceptional display, bagging a hat-trick of saves.
After the emphatic victory, video of Ronaldo's inspirational message to Joao Moutinho in the 2016 European Championships has resurfaced. Portugal drew 1-1 against Poland in the quarter-finals and went to penalties.
Moutinho was reluctant to take a penalty after his miss in the 2012 Euro semi-finals against Spain which led to Portugal's elimination. Cristiano Ronaldo, however, showcased true leadership as he told his teammate before the shootout began:
"Joao! Joao! Come take it. Come. You take it well. If we lose, so be it. Come. Show personality! Go! Show personality, you take it well."
The former Manchester United superstar's advice clearly worked as Moutinho found the back of the net and Portugal went on to win the semi-finals and lift the trophy that year.
"This is a disgrace!" - John Terry reacts to BBC's coverage of Cristiano Ronaldo's penalty miss in win over Slovenia
Chelsea legend John Terry has slammed BBC for their coverage of Cristiano Ronaldo's penalty miss in Portugal's win over Slovenia. The Englishman has branded the broadcaster's actions a disgrace.
After Jan Oblak saved Ronaldo's spot-kick in the first half of extra-time, the Portuguese superstar was seen crying his heart out during the interval. However, he went on to score in the penalty shootout and emerged triumphant.
During BBC's coverage of the penalty miss, the five-time Ballon d'Or winner was ridiculed and labeled 'Misstiano Penaldo'. This did not sit well with Terry, who was furious with the broadcaster and took to social media to express his disapproval.
He said on his Instagram story:
"BBC this is a disgrace!"
Portugal will take on France in the quarterfinals on July 5.
