Tottenham Hotspur midfielder James Maddison has hit back at a fan after being criticized for his form. The criticism came after the Spurs' 2-2 draw against Wolverhampton Wanderers on Sunday, December 29, in the Premier League.
During Sunday's 2-2 draw against Wolves, James Maddison was subbed on for Brennan Johnson in the 64th minute. Tottenham Hotspur were leading 2-1 at that time. However, they conceded a late equalizer with Wolves' Jorgen Strand Larsen finding the net in the 87th minute, making it a 2-2 draw.
Despite the Spurs' poor form, James Maddison was spotted at the Round of 16 clash at the World Darts Championship alongside his teammate Brennan Johnson on Sunday night. Maddison's decision to attend the event hours after Tottenham's 2-2 draw enraged some fans online.
One fan expressed their criticism on one of Maddison's Instagram posts and said:
“You taking the p**? The form we're in and you go to the darts? Unacceptable.”
The Spurs midfielder, however, did not take the comment well and hit back writing:
"Shut up you wally."
James Maddison's performance during Sunday's game was not exceptional in his 26 minutes on the pitch. He had one shot off target, lost possession four times, and fouled a player once.
Meanwhile, Tottenham Hotspur continued their poor form this season as they stand 11th in the Premier League table with 24 points off 19 games. The 2-2 draw against Wolves marked their third consecutive league game without a win.
"I can see how hard they’re trying" - Tottenham Hotspur boss Ange Postecoglou on the Spurs' poor recent form
Shortly after Tottenham were held to a 2-2 draw at home to Wolverhampton Wanderers on Sunday, coach Ange Postecoglou insisted that his side can do better. He said (via The Guardian):
“It’s still fairly tight. I just feel that at some point we’ll get a relatively healthy squad and when we do that, we’ll be able to perform at a high level consistently. We’ve already shown this year we can beat anyone.
"I can see how hard they’re trying and if we were at our sharpest, we would have got that third goal and maybe a fourth. A lot of these guys, they’re finding some form of energy to still be out there trying, but you know we’re certainly not as sharp as we can be.”
During Sunday's game, Postecoglou's side were dealt with another injury blow as Destiny Udogie had to be replaced in the 50th minute. Meanwhile, Rodrigo Bentancur was also booked during the match which means he'll miss Tottenham's next game against Newcastle United on January 4. This could leave the club with 10 unavailable players.
However, the Spurs could still aim to finish among the top five in the Premier League and fight for other titles, including the EFL Cup, FA Cup, and the UEFA Europa League.
