Manchester City goalkeeper Stefan Ortega has reacted to Liverpool fans' chant towards Pep Guardiola during their Premier League clash. The two sides faced off at Anfield on Sunday, December 1.
The Reds came off the block quickly and created multiple chances. Cody Gakpo opened the scoring in the 12th minute as the hosts continued to push for more goals. Manchester City produced some good moments in the second half but failed to equalize.
Things became worse for the visitors when Stefan Ortega was deemed to have fouled Luis Diaz in the box. Mohamed Salah converted the resulting penalty in the 78th minute to secure a 2-0 win for Liverpool.
After Salah's penalty, the Reds' fans were chanting "Sacked in the morning" towards Pep Guardiola amidst Manchester City's terrible form. The Spaniard held out six fingers, pointing out the number of Premier League titles he's won.
Stefan Ortega has now responded to the chants and Guardiola's response, saying (via The Guardian):
“Someone told me before that this area is probably not the best part in the UK. I think he reacted really well.”
Ortega made his first Premier League appearance and start of this season on Sunday. Apart from conceding a penalty, he made five saves and completed 33/39 passes.
Pep Guardiola on his gesture during Liverpool vs Manchester City
The Manchester City manager explained why he gave that response to the chants from Liverpool fans about his potential signing. He said after the game (via The Guardian):
"I'm so proud of my six Premier Leagues against that [Liverpool] team and the previous team [under Jürgen Klopp]. I didn’t expect Anfield to start chanting at 0-2 that I would be sacked. Maybe I deserved to be sacked with our results! Maybe I’m still in the job because I won six Premier Leagues and a lot of titles.
“They want to sack me. I wish they were more kind. Why didn’t they do it at 0-1? Why didn’t they do it last season when we won the Premier League? Why do they want to sack me now? I didn’t expect that from Anfield, for other clubs like Brighton I can understand it. But for Anfield I didn’t expect this, maybe it is the respect we have. They know we have won six Premier Leagues. But it’s fine, it’s part of the game.”
Manchester City have now lost four Premier League games in a row and are winless in their last seven games across competitions. They sit fifth in the league table, 11 points behind leaders Liverpool.
