Former Arsenal goalkeeper David Seaman has given his take on Chelsea shot-stopper Robert Sanchez. He acknowledged Sanchez’s ability to produce match-winning saves but also highlighted the inconsistencies in his performances that have garnered criticism.
Since joining Chelsea from Brighton & Hove Albion in 2023, Robert Sanchez has blown hot and cold in between the sticks for the west London club. While he has been impressive at times, he has made some mistakes that have proved costly for the Blues.
His recent critical mistake was against the Seagulls on Matchday 6 of the 2024-25 Premier League, where the Blues secured a 4-2 victory at Stamford Bridge. He was at fault for Brighton’s two goals and was consequently criticized by fans after the match.
Former Arsenal goalkeeper David Seaman has weighed into the conversation about the 26-year-old performance for the Blues. He said via The Chelsea Chronicle:
‘’He gets a bit of stick because he’s a little bit inconsistent. He can make great saves, and then he’ll make a real mess…
“Sometimes his mistakes are really bad. Some decisions that he makes, sometimes coming out for crosses that aren’t his. But he still makes match-winning saves.”
Up to date, Robert Sanchez has kept seven clean sheets and conceded 40 goals for the west London side in 29 appearances across competitions.
Former Chelsea player urges the Blues to sign Liverpool star to replace Robert Sanchez
Former Chelsea defender and pundit Jason Cundy wants the Blues to replace Robert Sanchez with Liverpool’s second-choice goalkeeper, Caoimhin Kelleher. He opined that Sanchez isn't as good as Kelleher and that Liverpool doesn’t look weaker whenever the latter is in goal for the Reds.
Sanchez has regained his position as first-choice goalkeeper under Enzo Maresca after being demoted to second-choice last season under Mauricio Pochettino. However, his constant blunders while in goal have brought into question his suitability as the Blues No.1.
Speaking to talkSPORT, Jason Cundy said he wants Liverpool’s Kelleher to replace the former Brighton man as the Blues shot-stopper. He said via Metro:
''What was really evident to me at the weekend was that Chelsea’s No.1 isn’t as good as Liverpool’s No.2. Sometimes when you see a No.2 goalkeeper come in, you might see the defence drop a bit deeper or they’re hesitant to do back passes.
''Whenever Kelleher’s in goal and he’s played a lot in the last 18 months to two years both in the Carabao Cup and Champions League, he never looks out of place. Liverpool don’t look any weaker with him in goal and that is a massive compliment by the way.
''If you’re a Liverpool fan, I know you’ve got [Giorgi] Mamardashvili coming in, but you don’t want Kelleher to go either. He’s too good to be a number two. I want him [at Chelsea].’
Robert Sanchez had kept two clean sheets and conceded 10 goals for the Blues in eight appearances across competitions this season.
