Tottenham Hotspur attacker Son Heung-min opened up about his big miss against Manchester City, which may have cost Arsenal the Premier League title. The Gunners' north London rivals put up a good challenge against the English top-flight champions when the two sides met on Tuesday, May 14.
If Spurs managed to play out a draw or beat Pep Guardiola's side, Arsenal would go into the final day of the league campaign on top of the standings.
After an impressive first-half display from Tottenham, it was Manchester City who broke the deadlock in the 51st minute through Erling Haaland. However, the South Korean has the opportunity to level proceedings just four minutes from time in a one-on-one situation with the opposition goalkeeper.
However, he failed to convert, which led many Gunners fans to lash out against Son. Speaking about the incident, he told the Evening Standard (via Metro):
"I'm also human. The keeper made a really good decision and made himself really big. But I take the responsibility to not score that big chance for the team because the team was working really hard and trying to get a good result."
Eventually, Haaland produced another goal from the penalty spot in stoppage time (90+1') to make sure of the points. As things stand, the Cityzens are two points clear of the Gunners heading into their last match against West Ham United on Sunday (May 19).
Meanwhile, Mikel Arteta and Co. host Everton at the Emirates Stadium on the same day.
Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta reacts to Son Heung-min's crucial miss against Manchester City
Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta claimed that his children were devastated after Tottenham star Son Heung-min failed to convert that big opportunity against Manchester City.
Unfortunately for the Spanish tactician, it could be the second season running that his team lose out to the Cityzens for the top spot in the league. Last year, they fell short of the league title by five points after leading the race for 248 days.
Speaking about Son's miss, Arteta said (via Mirror):
"If I had to pick a player in the Premier League for that moment, it would probably be him. Michael Jordan explained it many times, how many times he had the winning shot. It was always him."
"Sometimes yes, sometimes he did not manage to do it. This is the beauty of sport, as well. What can you do?"
Arsenal won their last Premier League back in the 2003-04 season, where the team went the entire campaign unbeaten. The Gunners are yet to win the honor at the Emirates Stadium, having moved to the ground from Highbury in 2006.
