“Sorry, but that’s bulls**t” - Ex-Arsenal star hits out at Jamie Carragher for ‘selfish’ claim about Mohamed Salah amid Liverpool contract uncertainty

Former Arsenal star slams Jamie Carragher

Former Arsenal winger Freddie Ljungberg has hit out at Jamie Carragher for his comments on Liverpool superstar Mohamed Salah. Carragher recently labeled Salah as 'selfish' for his public statement on his contract situation but Ljungberg has defended the Egyptian superstar.

Superstar trio of Virgil van Dijk, Trent Alexander-Arnold, and Salah have all entered the final year of their contracts at Anfield. The Reds face the prospect of losing three of their biggest stars that too for free next summer.

Salah has expressed his disappointment over Liverpool's inability to offer him a new deal. Following their comeback 3-2 win against Southampton in the league on November 24, the Egyptian claimed that he is probably on his way out of the club.

Jamie Carragher, who has the second-highest appearances for the Merseyside giants with 737, slammed Salah for his comment. The former England international said, as quoted by The Liverpool Echo:

“The most important thing for Liverpool Football Club this season is not the future of Mo Salah. It's not the future of Virgil van Dijk and it's not the future of Trent Alexander-Arnold."
"The most important thing is Liverpool winning the Premier League. That is more important than any of those players, and if he continues to put comments out, or his agent keeps putting tweets out, that's selfish. That's thinking about themselves and not the football club," Carragher added.

Freddie Ljungberg has now hit out at Carragher for his comments on Salah. He claimed that it is Liverpool who are disrespectful towards Salah. The former Sweden international claimed that the Egyptian is only making public comments because he wants to stay at Anfield. He said:

“I think that it is very disrespectful on the part of the club. Not as Jamie Carragher is trying to make it out to be – that it is Mo Salah who is disrespectful."

The former invincible-winner with Arsenal added:

“Sorry, but that's bull****. If you have a player of that calibre as Salah, if you don't want to extend with him and he wants to leave – then tell him. ‘We will show you respect, you are too old and want too much. Financially, it doesn't work for us.'"

Ljungberg concluded:

“Salah is saying this because he wants to put pressure on the club to get a new contract. He wants to stay when he does that.”

Salah has been arguably Liverpool's best player in the recent past and probably in their Premier League era. Since his reported £34.3 million switch to Anfield from AS Roma in 2017, he has been consistently producing for the Reds.

The Egyptian King is arguably having the best season of his entire career this time out under Arne Slot. The 32-year-old has scored 13 goals and provided 11 assists in 20 appearances across competitions this season.

Roy Keane gives his opinion on the title race after Liverpool's victory against Manchester City

Pundit Roy Keane has shared his opinion on the title race after Liverpool's 2-0 win against reigning Premier League champions Manchester City. Arne Slot's side secured a convincing 2-0 win at Anfield on Sunday, December 1.

After 13 games, the Merseyside giants are now nine points clear of Arsenal and Chelsea at the top of the table. Manchester City, who won four successive Premier League titles, are 11 points behind the Reds at the moment.

Roy Keane has claimed that Arne Slot's side look unstoppable right now but insisted that it is still early in the season. The Manchester United legend said, as quoted by Sports View:

“You don’t get any league medal in December. This team will take some stopping.”

Liverpool have won 18 of their first 20 games across all competitions under Arne Slot. They are also leading the Champions League table being the only side maintaining a 100 percent win record.
