Journalist Richard Keys is of the opinion that Liverpool should sell Trent Alexander-Arnold in January amid interest from Real Madrid. The England international is in the final year of his contract at Anfield, which comes to an end in the summer of 2025.
Should the Reds fail to negotiate a new deal with the right-back, he could walk away for free next summer. To secure a transfer sum for their talented defender, the Merseysiders must ensure that they let go of the player in the ongoing transfer window.
Claiming that they should take what they're being offered, Keys said (via Liverpool.com):
"Take the £20m Liverpool. TAA is going. End the saga."
Alexander-Arnold continues to play a key role under Arne Slot and has made 23 appearances across competitions this season, bagging a goal and five assists.
The Reds will have to show faith in their second-choice right-back Conor Bradley should Alexander-Arnold leave in January. The Northern Ireland international has impressed when given an opportunity in the last two seasons. In this campaign alone, he's featured on 12 occasions and has produced an assist.
Alexander-Arnold came through the ranks at Liverpool and has gone on to make 333 senior appearances across competitions to date, netting 20 goals and assisting 85 more. He's won the Premier League and Champions League trophies once each at Anfield, among other honors.
He will certainly be tempted to join Real Madrid, who are looking for a long-term replacement for Dani Carvajal.
Jamie Carragher shares his thoughts on Liverpool defender Trent Alexander-Arnold's links with Real Madrid
There is massive speculation about the future of Liverpool defender Trent Alexander-Arnold ahead of the club's Premier League match with Manchester United on January 5.
A recent report from Sky Sports claims that Real Madrid's latest bid for the Englishman had been turned down by the Reds.
Club legend Jamie Carragher had his say on the matter on X (formerly Twitter), writing:
"I love Trent as a lad & a player, but his team would’ve told Real Madrid to bid & also would’ve known LFC would turn it down. It’s to try & cover themselves when he leaves for free. Again it’s something the club/fans don’t need with a huge game coming up."
The Reds do not need any distractions at the moment, given that they are in the middle of a title race. Arne Slot's side are atop the Premier League standings and are six points ahead of second-placed Arsenal with a game in hand.
