Ex-Manchester United forward Dwight Yorke has lambasted Arsenal for not signing Alexander Isak before the player's permanent move to Newcastle United.
The Gunners, who are third in the Premier League table with 33 points from 17 matches, have reportedly been on the lookout for a new striker for a while. They are believed to be aiming to strengthen their frontline to boost their title hopes.
During a chat with Sports Lens ahead of the Gunners' 5-1 league win at Crystal Palace, Yorke shared his thoughts on Mikel Arteta's side. He said (h/t Mirror):
"Everyone keeps banging on about Arsenal missing a number nine, and I do think there's something to it. You watch their games, the last two, they've been so dominant and haven't been able to win the games. Let's have it right, they've dropped four vital points in their two last Premier League fixtures against Everton and Fulham."
Claiming that the north London outfit should have signed Isak prior to the striker's £63 million move to Newcastle in the summer of 2022, Yorke added:
"They're missing something. I can't understand why Arsenal hesitated when they had the opportunity to sign Alexander Isak from Real Sociedad. They sat on their hands, and Newcastle swooped in and took him. That was ridiculous."
Yorke, who scored 123 Premier League goals as a player, concluded:
"If [they] want to win the Premier League title, they should go to Newcastle and bang £100 million on the table for Isak as soon as the January transfer window opens. I think the kid looks really good whenever I see him play. He does all the right things properly. He's a threat. He would score so many goals playing for Arsenal."
Isak, 25, has scored 41 goals in 67 Premier League games for Newcastle.
Arsenal in talks to sign 26-year-old striker
According to Football Transfers, Arsenal have contacted Sporting CP forward Viktor Gyokeres' camp over a potential switch. They are set to face stiff competition from Newcastle United in the race to snap up the £54 million-rated player.
Gyokeres, 26, has been in sensational form since joining Sporting from Coventry City in 2023. He has found the back of the opposition net 70 times and provided 20 assists in 76 matches in all competitions for the Primeira Liga champions.
Despite their interest in the Sweden international, the Gunners are also keeping close tabs on RB Leipzig striker Benjamin Sesko. Gunners manager Mikel Arteta is believed to be an admirer of the 21-year-old Slovenia international for a while.
