Cody Gakpo has urged his Liverpool teammates to focus on matches and not think of the Premier League title. He believes that the Reds are capable of winning the league but need to keep working hard.
Speaking to the media after the win over Crystal Palace on Saturday (October 5), Gakpo stated that the Liverpool players need to understand how Arne Slot wants them to play and improve. He wants the players to come together and win matches as they come. He said:
“Obviously now (we’re) top of the league. That’s important obviously, we are aware of that, but that’s not the most important thing at the moment.
"I think everybody in the team thinks we are growing in the way the gaffer wants us to play. I think that’s the most important one. We really are believing in ourselves and what we are capable of.
"Hopefully it can lead to a lot of wins and hopefully we are still on top at the end of the season. But for now it’s just staying very calm, keep improving and keep working hard and we will see it from that point.”
The Reds are top of the Premier League table after seven matches. They are a point clear of defending champions Manchester City and back-to-back runners-up Arsenal.
Liverpool backed to win the Premier League next season by Joe Cole
Former Chelsea star Joe Cole has, meanwhile, stated that Liverpool will not get their hands on the Premier League title this season. He still backs Arsenal or Manchester City to lift the title.
Cole said on TNT Sports:
“I’ve backed Arsenal to win the league, and Man City are Man City. Liverpool are a team everyone was sleeping on a little bit but I think the smartest thing they’ve done this year was not bringing any players in.
"I know it sounds crazy because all the others teams have strengthened but what it’s allowed the new manager to do is work with the group because you don’t want to add more changes on top of an already massive change with a manager leaving. They were close-ish last year in the sense of they had a few injuries and a few bad spells.
"I don’t think they’ll win it [this season] but I think they’ll be pushing. If he [Slot] carries on the way he is, I think next season will be the season for Liverpool.”
The Reds are up against Chelsea next on October 20 in the Premier League but the players are currently off on international duty.
