Manchester United legend Gary Neville has claimed that it is on new manager Ruben Amorim to get the best out of the players at the club. The former defender has claimed that it is key that the Portuguese boss does well with the players at his disposal.
Speaking on Sky Sports, he said:
"He has to get the best out of the players. The players need to take responsibility for what's happened in the last 10 years."
"The club have signed a lot of players that other clubs wanted and when those players have arrived at Manchester United they've deteriorated. Why is that? It could be the coach, it could be the players, it could be the environment is too big for them, whatever it is it has to change because if he [Amorim] doesn't change that he will fall the same way the rest of them have," he continued.
He went on to add:
"There are managers that have come here that have been tried and tested and successful, there are players that have come here with great potential and ones that you thought would be good signings for the club - only really Bruno [Fernandes] I can think of in 10 years has signed for the club and done more than I thought he would. I can't think of any other player. That's £1.8bn spent in the last 10 years, that's one thing that has to change."
Amorim is set to take charge from November 11. He joins United after a successful stint with Portuguese club Sporting, who have won the league twice in his four-year tenure.
Ruud van Nistelrooy opens up on Manchester United criticism from former players
Manchester United interim boss Ruud van Nistelrooy stated that the criticism in media from the club's former players indicated their passion towards the team.
The Dutchman said (via BBC):
"Basically, they care for the club, want it to do well and are disappointed if it doesn't."
"I don't have any problems with that. We all do our jobs and they have opinions. It is absolutely fine.
"I don't take it personally. I am still in touch with some of them. When I see them I have a cup of coffee with them," he added.
A forgettable start to the season sees the Red Devils in 13th position after nine games, with manager Erik ten Hag dismissed from his duties. The likes of Gary Neville, Roy Keane, and Patrice Evra have expressed their concerns over the squad's performances.
Ruud van Nistelrooy, who shared a dressing room with all of the above Manchester United legends, joined the coaching staff in the summer. He is set to be the interim coach until Ruben Amorim joins after the international break.
