Former Manchester United assistant coach Benni McCarthy has revealed why Amad Diallo failed to thrive at the club under Erik ten Hag. The Ivorian forward was largely kept on the fringes under the Dutch manager at the club, but has become a key player since his exit.
Signed from Atalanta in 2021, the 22-year-old had to spend time out on loan at Rangers and Sunderland in the Championship before returning to Old Trafford in 2023. Despite his impressive showings for the Black Cats, the versatile forward struggled for minutes.
Amad played only 12 times in the 2023-24 season due to a knee injury picked up in pre-season. This campaign, he made just six starts before Ten Hag's dismissal in November, scoring once and providing one assist.
Former Manchester United striker Benni McCarthy was among the backroom staff of Ten Hag at the club, and he revealed to the Podcast and Chill Network why Amad did not play many minutes. He pointed out that the manager preferred to play Antony as the Brazilian was his own signing.
"Tactically, when we set up, the manager felt that Antony was the best, better player for the job that he wanted because he knew Antony from Ajax. He was his player, so he invested in him, and the club supported him.
"So, of course, he had to support the player that he bought, I think that's why he persisted in playing Antony. It's because he knew the capabilities when Antony was at his best.
"And then you had (Alejandro) Garnacho who was also playing well, scoring goals. (Marcus) Rashford, on any given day, could demolish anyone. And then you've got (Rasmus) Hojlund, you spend £70m on bringing him in, so he has to play.
"So someone's gotta (miss out), and unfortunately for Amad, the manager goes with the player he thinks is probably more capable for, for those type of games tactically, defensively and attacking."
Amad Diallo has turned his situation around since Ten Hag's exit, thriving under Ruud van Nistelrooy first and now Ruben Amorim. The Ivory Coast international has become one of the first names on the team sheet, playing as a wing-back or as an inside forward for his side.
Amad has contributed two goals and six assists in the Premier League this season, including his scintillating winner against Manchester City. The forward has also found the net twice in the UEFA Europa League this season.
Manchester United set their sights on Napoli superstar - Reports
Manchester United are the latest side to look to sign striker Victor Osimhen on a permanent basis from Napoli as they intend to strengthen their squad in 2025. The Red Devils have registered their interest in the Nigerian striker, who is on loan at Galatasaray this season.
Journalist Sacha Tavolieri has revealed that Manchester United are keen on the striker and will look to sign him in January. Napoli are prepared to accept €75 million, as opposed to the €80 million release clause in his contract.
Victor Osimhen will be a great addition to the Red Devils squad as he will provide a serious goal threat for the side, who have scored only 21 league goals this season. Osimhen has 12 goals in 15 appearances for Galatasaray in the league and Europa League.
Manchester United may look to sign the striker once the January transfer window opens next week. They will have to pay a break fee to Galatasaray to be able to sign the striker.
