Former Chelsea winger Shaun Wright-Phillips has claimed that his former club should sign a new defender instead of launching a move for Napoli loanee Victor Osimhen in the future.
After finishing sixth in the Premier League last season, the Blues named Enzo Maresca as their new head coach. They have impressed under the Italian tactician, recording 18 wins and just four defeats in 27 overall outings this season.
Under Maresca, Chelsea have found the back of the opposition a staggering 71 times across competitions. The Stamford Bridge outfit have shipped 28 goals, including 19 from 17 Premier League games, in all competitions this term.
During a recent chat with betting website sportscasting.com, Wright-Phillips was asked if the Blues should try to sign Osimhen after failing earlier this summer. He replied (h/t Metro):
"I think Victor Osimhen would be a top player in the Premier League, but I wouldn't necessarily say that the striker position is where Chelsea should be prioritising in the next few transfer windows."
Revealing why the Blues need to sign a defender, Wright-Phillips added:
"They let Thiago Silva go, but they didn't replace him. I think they need more experience in the defence rather than in the striker position right now. They're not struggling to score goals. That's not a problem for them right now. The problem is they're conceding goals. If they can cut some of those mistakes then again, we see a different Chelsea."
With Nicolas Jackson and Christopher Nkunku in fine form this campaign, the Blues could opt not to sign a striker next January. They could instead bolster their defence as Axel Disasi and Benoit Badiashile have been below-par at times.
Enzo Maresca hails Chelsea stars after draw
Earlier this Sunday (December 22), Chelsea registered a 0-0 Premier League draw at Everton. They relished 75% possession and had five of their 12 shots on target, but failed to score a key goal against the Sean Dyche-coached outfit.
After the end of the contest, Enzo Maresca opined (h/t Tribal Football):
"That was a real game. I am very happy because the performance of the boys was fantastic. Sometimes you have to play a different game and we are learning to play a different game. They are one of the best teams in Europe in terms of clean sheets. I said to the players I was more happy than [last week's] game at Brentford."
The Blues are second in the league table with 35 points from 17 matches.
