The United Stand presenter Mark Goldbridge has tipped Arsenal to sack manager Mikel Arteta due to the team's boring performances and failure to secure silverware. In recent seasons, the North London side has consistently progressed under the Spanish tactician's tutelage to become a league contender.
Arteta has been in charge of the London-based side since December 2019 and has won one FA Cup in his five years at the club. Speaking about the fate of the former Gunners Captain turned gaffer, Goldbridge told That's Football via Football 365:
“On a serious note, I think he will get the sack. Whether it will be in the next 12 months or two years, the next three years, I think he will get the sack. Because I think there has always been with Arteta, because of the difficult start"
“They’ve already dropped the points that are going to stop them winning the league. Then [Bukayo] Saka gets injured, [Martin] Odegaard was injured at the start of the season. They’ve been praised for their set-pieces but now it’s become almost obsession. Watching the Man United game, I couldn’t believe the amount of people in the live chat saying ‘oh look at them surrounding the referee.’"
The media personality concluded, saying:
“That’s something I’ve never really associated with Arsenal. Trying to get yellow cards, trying to get free-kicks, because that’s the margin they are going for. Can we get people sent off? Can we get free-kicks for set-pieces? They were never that will, they were actually a good team to watch but they’ve become such a hard watch. And that’s where Arteta is going to lose more people because they’ve become quite, dare I say, boring.”
Mikel Arteta is contracted to Arsenal until the summer of 2027. His side was recently knocked out of the FA Cup at home by 10-man Manchester United on penalties.
"Are we going to win big trophies? I don't know. But playing like this... there are very few teams in the world that can play at that level." Mikel Arteta discusses Arsenal's potential title chances after the loss to Manchester United in the FA Cup.
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has discussed his team's chances of winning silverware following their FA Cup defeat to Manchester United. The Gunners lost on penalties to the Red Devils at home despite having an extra man for more than 60 minutes of the match.
Arteta was bullish about his team's performance and abilities despite their disappointing result against their rivals. Speaking to the press after the match, the Spaniard said:
"Obviously [we are] relying on not performing like this and waiting for one shot to go on target and score a goal. I don't want to bet on that. I bet on that team to try, Are we going to win big trophies? I don't know. But playing like this... there are very few teams in the world that can play at that level."
Mikel Arteta has failed to secure silverware with Arsenal since his first season with the club, which was half a decade ago. The side is also in danger of losing the League Cup after suffering defeat in the first leg of its semifinal clash with Newcastle. Arsenal currently sits behind Liverpool in the Premier League.
