Former Manchester United defender John O'Shea has backed Marcus Rashford to overturn his form amidst immense criticism. He referenced Ryan Giggs, who also faced criticism but managed to turn his form around to have an incredible career at Old Trafford.
Rashford came through the Red Devils' academy and has made 425 senior appearances for them, registering 138 goals and 67 assists. However, his form has dipped massively since the start of last season, both in terms of output and general performance. He recorded just eight goals and five assists in 43 games across competitions last season.
Rashford has faced immense criticism from fans and pundits, including Manchester United fans. John O'Shea, however, believes the Englishman will turn his form around.
"That’s the standards you set, I remember playing in the team and Ryan Giggs, one of the most decorated players, was getting lots of grief," O'Shea told GOAL. "Top Manchester United players have got grief. They'll have spells in their careers and they'll have to show that resilience to bounce back and reach the levels they got to."
"Marcus will be similar in that because he’s a goalscorer, he creates and he assists, so if he’s not doing that there’s going to be more scrutiny," he added.
Rashford has scored seven goals and provided three assists in 23 games across competitions this season.
Former Manchester United explains what Marcus Rashford must do to get back in fans' good books
Marcus Rashford hasn't only faced criticism for his underwhelming performances but also for his off-the-pitch activities. He recently faced scrutiny when he was seen in New York during the international break instead of training at Manchester United.
Former United striker Louis Saha believes Rashford needs to find his obsession with football back and show that he wants to be the best.
“Marcus has to actually show his obsession about football again," Saha said (via Mirror). "He needs to clearly show that he's obsessed and that he wants to be the best player. If he's doing something outside the game, he will understand the consequences.
“You can do whatever you want, travel everywhere you want, but there are consequences. If you're obsessed, you don’t need those distractions. He should be obsessed, which will only improve his game.
“When you see interviews with athletes that he really admires, they all say the same thing. When they want to reach the top, they train more than anybody. You don't see them doing anything outside.”
Rashford has also been linked with a move away from Manchester United. His contract expires in 2028.
