BBC pundit Chris Sutton has criticized both Manchester United goalkeepers Andre Onana and Altay Bayindir after their recent error-strewn displays. Both goalkeepers conceded directly from corner-kicks, a rare occurrence, in separate games in the space of a week.
Red Devils boss Ruben Amorim opted for Turkiye international Bayindir between the sticks for the Carabao Cup meeting with Tottenham Hotspur on December 19. The former Fenerbahce goalkeeper let in a corner-kick from Heung-Min Son in the second half of the encounter, which Spurs won 4-3. Exactly a week later, Onana conceded a similar goal from Matheus Cunha in Manchester United's 2-0 defeat at Wolves.
Speaking via BBC Sport, Sutton pointed out that the performances of the goalkeepers will do little to help Amorim navigate his way through the job. He likened their mistakes to those made by U-12 players, pointing out that goalkeepers rarely concede those in professional football. He said (via teamtalk):
“I said before Christmas that I thought Newcastle would hit their stride and they have done exactly that. The way they are playing, they should win at Old Trafford and make it four league wins in a row.
“Manchester United’s form is the exact opposite. I am not concerned about Amorim getting the sack but it really does not help when your goalkeeper keeps on conceding goals direct from a corner – that is under-12s stuff.
“I remember it happening when I was watching my son play when he was about 15 and he got done off a corner. I told him you would never see it happen to a professional goalkeeper, but it has happened twice in two weeks to Manchester United – first to Altay Bayindir and then Andre Onana. You could not make it up.”
Altay Bayindir, 26, has played three games, all in the Carabao Cup, this season for the Red Devils, where he is the second-choice goalkeeper. Onana has come in for severe criticism over his displays since joining the club from Inter Milan, and the goal conceded at the Molineux will do little to reassure anyone.
Manchester United linked with Belgium U-21 star - Reports
Manchester United are considering a move for Royal Antwerp and Belgium U-21 The Telegraph. The Red Devils have Lammens in their sights, and have sent scouts out to watch him in Belgium on a number of occasions.
United are dissatisfied with the performances of Andre Onana since he was signed to replace David de Gea, as well as back-up Altay Bayindir. As a result, they are on the lookout for any goalkeepers who will fit into their squad-building and eventually replace Onana and Bayindir between the sticks.
Lammens, 22, has been in impressive form for Royal Antwerp this season, earning a place in the club's starting XI. The Belgian goalkeeeper has kept five clean sheets in 20 games for his club this season and has attracted interest from German giants Borussia Dortmund.
