Former footballer and pundit Owen Hargreaves recently weighed in on why Arsenal and Chelsea cannot beat Liverpool in the Premier League title race. The Reds currently sit atop the league table with 42 points off 17 matches with a game in hand against Everton.
Liverpool have been exceptional in the Premier League in the first half of the season. The Reds have lost only one game in the league so far as Nottingham Forest beat them 1-0 at home. Three games have ended in a stalemate. They are six points clear of second-placed Arsenal, who have 36 points off 18 games.
Meanwhile, Chelsea stand third in the table with 35 points off 18 matches. However, the season is far from over and the title race can heat up in the latter half of the season if Liverpool do not keep up their form.
During a talk on Premier League Productions (h/t Empire of the Kop), football pundit Owen Hargreaves weighed in on the title race.
"The biggest thing for me is the reason Arsenal and Chelsea won’t win it, they don’t have any experience like Liverpool. Alisson, Van Dijk, Trent, Robertson, Salah – you’ve got five guys who have been there and done it, as Mo said for years," Hargreaves said.
"This Liverpool team is perfectly set up, they’ve got a real mix of young players, a brilliant front three but actually, because they can play different every game, they’re going to be hard to stop," he added.
Liverpool's last and only Premier League title came in the 2019-20 season under the guidance of former coach Jurgen Klopp. However, before the inception of the Premier League in the 1992-93 season, the Merseysiders dominated English football and won 18 league titles, making it an overall 19 titles.
They were second only to Manchester United, who won seven league titles before the Premier League's inception and 13 more after it began, making it an overall 20 titles.
"I don't fancy Chelsea"- Micheal Owen considers Arsenal the only team who can stop Liverpool from winning the Premier League
Speaking on Premier League Productions, former England international and pundit Michael Owen named the Gunners as the only team who can stop Liverpool from winning the title this season. He said (via The Mirror):
"I think their only danger could be Arsenal. I don't fancy Chelsea, I think they are too young, too inexperienced. (...) For me it's Arsenal only in terms of danger to them [the Reds]. But I think they're only a danger to themselves, the way they are playing, unless they implode themselves, unless they have a Manchester City moment, it looks like they're streaking clear."
Despite the Gunners' position in the table, Mikel Arteta's side has been suffering from multiple injuries. Their key man, Bukayo Saka was also sidelined after he picked up a hamstring injury during their 5-1 win over Crystal Palace this month. Other injured players include Raheem Sterling, Ben White, and Takehiro Tomiyasu.
Meanwhile, Chelsea are unlikely to catch up with the Merseysiders at this stage with a seven-point deficit. The Blues boss Enzo Maresca also does not consider his players in pressure for the title race this season, as per quotes from the Premier League's official website.
