“The current governing bodies are like musicians on the Titanic” - Real Madrid CEO aims dig at UEFA as he talks up Super League plans

Real Madrid CEO Jose Angel Sanchez has taken a dig at UEFA, comparing them to ’the musicians on the Titanic’ amid plans to continue working on the formation of the Super League. Sanchez believes that a competition controlled by clubs would better address the financial and competitive disparity plaguing the beautiful game.

Real Madrid are one of the two founders of the Super League in 2021. However, the formation of the competition was stalled after widespread opposition from fans, which led some European heavyweights to pull out.

Following the withdrawal of the clubs, UEFA opened disciplinary proceedings against the three remaining clubs at the time: Barcelona, Real Madrid, and Juventus. They claimed these clubs violated its principles of Statutes and Club Licensing by attempting to form a breakaway league.

However, in a surprising turn of events, the European Court of Justice (ECJ) ruled in favor of the Super League founders in 2023 that their formation of the Super League did not violate European competition law.

While clubs like Manchester United, Liverpool, Chelsea, and the like withdrew from the competition, Real Madrid and Barcelona remained committed to the formation of the Super League.

The two Spanish giants reportedly insisted that they will continue to work on the execution of the project as they believe it will help provide a more sustainable financial model.

Madrid CEO Angel Sanchez recently shed more light on the rationale behind the formation of the Super League, claiming the current UEFA administration is failing. He said (via GOAL);

“If we want to preserve football’s leadership position in the sport and entertainment industry, we have to change the system. The current governing bodies are like the musicians on the Titanic, who kept playing even when the ship went under. The system as we know it is over – we need to organize things differently in the industry. That was the rationale behind the Super League and it is even more pressing now.”

"UEFA is a monopoly" – When Real Madrid president accused European football governing body of lack of transparency

Back in 2021, Real Madrid president Florentino Perez accused UEFA of trying to impose undue control on European clubs.

After UEFA stood against their formation of the Super League, Perez hit back by calling them a ‘monopoly’ while stating that the competition is being formed to save football. He told Spanish TV El Chiringuito (via The Guardian);

‘’UEFA is a monopoly. They should be more transparent. They should know why they say those things. All we want is to make football better. We want to sabe football, which is at risk, it really is. And I’m saying this without being the owner of Real Madrid."
"They have created a [Champions League] format that in our opinion does not work. There’s no one who says that it works. I can assure that. I have spoken to every league, to every federation and no one understands it. Besides, they say it will start in 2024 but we will be dead by 2024. There are clubs that have lost hundreds of millions this year and the previous one."

Florentino Perez further said Real Madrid will not be kicked out of the UCL due to their formation of the Super League. Los Blancos are the most successful team in the Champions League, having won it the most (15 times).
