Carlo Ancelotti believes Kylian Mbappe was the only Real Madrid player who had a 'good game' against Barcelona on Sunday. The two arch-rivals faced off in the Supercopa de Espana final at King Abdullah Sports City Stadium in Saudi Arabia.
Mbappe gave Los Blancos an early lead in the fifth minute, capitalizing on a lethal counterattack. However, Barcelona turned it around exceptionally well. Lamine Yamal equalized in the 22nd minute before Robert Lewandowski converted a penalty in the 36th minute. Raphinha made it 3-1 three minutes later before Alejandro Balde added another in the 10th minute of first-half stoppage time.
Raphinha then scored Barca's fifth goal three minutes into the second half. Wojciech Szczesny was sent off in the 56th minute and Rodrygo scored for Real Madrid in the 60th minute. However, the Blaugrana managed the game well with 10 men and sealed a big win.
After the game, Carlo Ancelotti said that only Kylian Mbappe played well for Real Madrid on the night, saying (via Madrid Xtra):
"Kylian Mbappé played a good game. The rest, let's forget it."
Apart from scoring the goal, Mbappe completed 8/9 dribble attempts against Barcelona (via SofaScore). He completed 15/19 passes, made one key pass, created one big chance, and won 11/15 duels.
Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti on the disappointment after losing against Barcelona
The El Clasico on Sunday was the second time Barcelona hammered Real Madrid this season. They beat them 4-0 at the Santiago Bernabeu in LaLiga earlier this season and now followed it up with a resounding 5-2 win. They also lifted the Supercopa de Espana trophy in the process.
After the game, Carlo Ancelotti was asked how disappointed he was with the performance and the result. He said (via Managing Madrid):
“We have to look at reality. We didn’t defend well. They scored goals very easily. We didn’t work well on a collective or individual level. It leaves us sad and disappointed. This is football. We have to go home. Our sadness is that of our fans. We have to look forward and prepare well for the next game.
“I am sad, like everyone else. It is a normal feeling. I am disappointed, there is no need to hide it. But this is football. Sometimes you are able to win and other times you have to learn from defeat. Nothing. There is still a lot of season left and we have to look forward.”
Both sides will now move to Copa del Rey Round of 16 action later this week. Barcelona will host Real Betis on Wednesday while Real Madrid will host Celta Vigo a day later.
