Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim has shared his thoughts on his side's recent performance against Wolverhampton Wanderers in the Premier League. The game ended in a 2-0 defeat for the Red Devils on Thursday (December 26) at Molineux Stadium.
Following a goalless first half, Manchester United were left with 10 men on the pitch as Bruno Fernandes was shown his second yellow card for committing a foul on Nélson Semedo in the 47th minute. The Portuguese star had received his first book in the 18th minute for taking down Matheus Cunha.
Wolves opened the scoring with Cunha's right-footed shot from a difficult angle and long range following a corner in the 58th minute. Hwang Hee-Chan doubled the score for the hosts with an assist by the 25-year-old Brazilian following a fast break (90+9').
Manchester United maintained 49% ball possession, with four shots on target. Following the Red Devils' defeat, Ruben Amorim pointed out the aspects that the squad needs to work on and said (via The United Stand on X):
"We have to improve the relationships, but we have some moments. We lack a little bit of aggression, but we don't train. We just play and try to find a better way to win games and that's it. We can't control the games like the other ones that we lost. I think we were always in control of the game, not always dominating, but in control of some things, some set-pieces. The sending off was really hard for us."
With Manchester United's 2-0 loss against Wolverhampton Wanderers in the Premier League, Ruben Amorim's side stand 14th on the league table with 22 points in 18 matches. The Red Devils have won only one of their last five league fixtures, with the rest of the four ending in defeats.
Ruben Amorim on Bruno Fernandes' red card in Manchester United's 2-0 loss against Wolves in PL
Ruben Amorim weighed in on Bruno Fernandes being sent off after receiving two yellow cards in Manchester United's 2-0 Premier League defeat against Wolves on Thursday. During his 47 minutes on the pitch, the Red Devils' captain had 43 touches and one key pass while maintaining a passing accuracy of 82% (23/28). He had no shots on target and lost possession 13 times.
Speaking in the post-match press conference, Amorim addressed Fernandes' red card, saying(via SPORTbible):
"I am always frustrated with the red card, but it can happen as he always wants to go for the ball. It is not like he wants to stop the player with a yellow [card]. He wanted to go for the ball, the guy got there first and there is a contact and that thing is tough on him also."
The Portuguese manager also spoke about the impact that Fernandes' red card had on the Red Devils' game against Wolves. He told Amazon Prime:
"The sending off was really hard for us. It's so tough to win games in this league with 11 men. With 10 men, it's more difficult. We have to focus on that."
This marked Bruno Fernandes' third red card of the season, making him the first United player to be sent off thrice in a campaign across competitions since Nemanja Vidic in 2008-09. However, as his red card against Tottenham in October was overturned, the midfielder will face a one-game suspension. He will miss the home Premier League clash with Newcastle United on Monday (December 30).
